Blackhawks 2, Rangers 6 — Three Stars, Key Takeaways

The Rangers were 2-7-0 in their nine games leading into today’s game — and lost in Washington yesterday. The Blackhawks were able to get on the board first for the league-leading 25th time this season. But… the Blackhawks are still the Blackhawks and the ice slanted heavily in favor of the Rangers in the second half of the period. At the end of 20 minutes, the Rangers had a 2-1 lead and had out-shot the Hawks 14-6.

Filip Chytil extended the Rangers’ lead less than four minutes into the second period. Even though the Rangers have been bad and played on Saturday, they looked like the better team simply going about their business. They cruised easily to a 5-1 lead but the young kids didn’t quit. Frank Nazar stayed with a play got Wyatt Kaiser got his first NHL goal to cut the lead to three.

The third period played out like 20 minutes of a couple teams that are collectively happy to be closer to either the trade deadline or the end of the season. Dull thud exemplified.

    Star 1: Wyatt Kaiser

When the game sucks as a whole but you scored your first career NHL goal, you get to be the No. 1 star by default. Congrats to Kaiser for getting on the board!

    Star 2: Connor Bedard

Bedard made a nice play to take the puck away, avoid a couple opponents and find Tyler Bertuzzi for the first goal of the game. With the helper, Bedard joins Jonathan Toews (10 games in 2007-08) as the second Blackhawks teenager since 1986-87 with a point streak of seven or more games.

Star 3: the 50-50 Raffle guy

While the Blackhawks were down 3-1 in the second period, the 50-50 raffle guy encouraged the folks in section 318 to buy tickets by yelling “Hey, the Bears won! So can you!” So yeah… this game was good enough that he gets one of my three stars for the day.

    Key Takeaways

By the end of the second period, every single Blackhawks skater was on the ice for an even strength goal against. This was a game in which the numbers for Arvid Söderblom won’t look good but watching the actual game tells us he got zero help. This was a bad game from the 18 skaters in front of him. Jason Dickinson won 3 of 4 faceoffs in the first period. The rest of the Blackhawks’ roster won 2 of 11 draws. By the end of the second period, Dickinson had won 10 of 15… and the rest of the Blackhawks won 7 of 23. For as good as they looked in the game on Friday night, the line of Nazar, Colton Dach and Teuvo Teräväinen got eaten for lunch in the first period. None of them was on the ice for a shot on net in the first period for the Blackhawks and they were on the ice for six (Dach) and five (Nazar, Teräväinen) at even strength (per Natural Stat Trick). During the second period the Blackhawks moved Dach to the line with Bedard and Bertuzzi. So there’s that. At the end of two periods, Craig Smith and Alex Vlasic were the only Blackhawks with more than one shot on net (they were credited with two each). Smith also had a team-leading four hits at the second intermission.
