Derrick Rose Answers the “What If” Question, Coby White’s Career-Night, and Other Bulls Bullets

Last night’s win over the New York Knicks represented everything wrong with the Chicago Bulls. Another victory over a top 3 team in the East only further strengthens their case for a Play-In appearance, thus putting their 2025 pick in jeopardy and keeping them on a directionless track.

At the same time, last night’s Derrick Rose celebration represented everything right about the city of Chicago. Whether it be Rose’s personal story or the 22,000 emotional fans who packed the United Center, the event served as a reminder of how much this community cares.

You can watch the full halftime tribute in our post here, as well as Derrick Rose’s directorial debut!

WATCH: Derrick Rose’s Full Retirement Ceremony AND Directorial Debut! Before last night’s tip-off, Derrick Rose sat down to meet with reporters. I encourage you to watch his full media availability here, but the best moment came when the franchise legend answered the always daunting “what if” question. His response underscores just how at peace he really is with the end of his career:

“That’s something I really don’t think about it. The last time I had those conversations was years and years ago,” Rose said. “Who knows? But, at the same time, with me being obsessed, I wouldn’t have found out who I was as a person. I was obsessed with the game … If I would have won one championship, I would have wanted four. Then, it would have pulled me away, further and further away, from finding self-knowledge, self-revelation, an identity.

Everybody’s story is different. For some reason, mine ended up being this way. Coming from Chicago, we roll with the punches.”

GOSH! I DON’T HAVE ANY TEARS LEFT, DERRICK! The entire night showed how much Rose has come out of his shell. The once quiet and humble kid from Englewood stepped in front of every microphone with enthusiasm. As he suggested in the quote above, the 36-year-old has found his identity. Ahead of yesterday’s celebration, the Chicago Bulls released a 20-minute-long tribute video. LeBron James, Chris Paul, and John Calipari are just some of the big names to discuss Rose’s memorable career. Add this alongside Rose’s walk down memory lane with Joakim Noah, and the Bulls TV crew might as well deserve Oscar! Look, the Chicago Bulls deserve a lot of credit for what they pulled off last night. Whether it was the halftime spectacle or the small details throughout the concourse, everything was handled with class and care. Honestly, I just wish the Bulls poured this much time and effort into building an on-court product fans could be proud of. With that said, while victories do feel counterintuitive right now, the Bulls had no choice but to win last night’s game. Derrick Rose night deserved to be entertaining from start to finish, and this team rose to the occasion (pun intended). Coby White even admitted after the game how much it meant to this locker room to get the win. I guess that’s why they shot 20-37 from downtown and score a season-high 139 points!

    — Chicago Bulls (@chicagobulls) January 5, 2025 Indeed, White looked as motivated as anyone. He finished the night with 33 points on 11-17 shooting. New York had no answer for him along the perimeter, as he nailed a career-high nine threes! Meanwhile, Zach LaVine spent his time dominating in the paint. He went 8/11 inside 15 feet, attacking a Knicks defense that lacks a true rim protector. The highlights are worth a watch … Lonzo Ball dunked for his second game in a row, folks! With the Bulls knotted up 82-82, Josh Giddey found Ball for the alley-oop slam. You absolutely love to see Ball having that much confidence in his knees!

    — Kevin O'Connor (@KevinOConnorNBA) January 5, 2025 The outcome may not matter, but several Bears are playing for something against the Packers this afternoon. Similar to the Bulls, the Blackhawks have a reason to keep their eye on the trade market over the next few weeks.
