Two of the NFL’s top newsbreakers aren’t waiting until Monday to share nuggets and tidbits regarding upcoming head coach searches from around the league — including at least one update that pertains to the Chicago Bears.
NFL on FOX insider Jay Glazer shares that he expects Mike Vrabel to interview for the Bears head coaching gig this week. Vrabel is high on a bunch of coaching lists, according to Glazer. That isn’t surprising. After all, Vrabel has already completed an interview with the New York Jets. Teammate Patrick Flowers wrote about Vrabel as a candidate back in December and you should check it out. In the meantime, you can watch the rest of this video from Glazer on FOX:

— FOX Sports: NFL (@NFLonFOX) January 5, 2025Save for Glazer mentioning the Bears’ upcoming interview with Mike Vrabel, the biggest anecdote in the video above is that multiple teams have an interest in making a try at swinging a trade for Minnesota Vikings Head Coach Kevin O’Connell. Next year will be O’Connell’s contract year and there have been no extension talks to this point. At first blush, this feels like a moment that could be used as leverage to get talks going. As for the teams who have interest in making this happen, I can’t blame them for wanting to try. The worst the Vikings can say is no.
More NFL and Bears-adjacent rumors
ESPN’s Adam Schefter has more on the rumor front, including another coach who teams could try to woo via a trade:

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) January 5, 2025Schefty hinting that NFL teams could call the Pittsburgh Steelers about Mike Tomlin is one of the bolder things you’ll hear on the rumor mill. The Steelers have stumbled down the stretch. They have lost five of seven games and closed the regular season on a four-game losing streak. Pittsburgh recently signed Tomlin to an extension. But if Schefter is hearing that teams could send trade calls for the Steelers head coach, it means that there are folks who do not care that he just signed a new deal.
I doubt that Pittsburgh will send Mike Tomlin away in a trade. That isn’t how that organization does business. But if teams are desperate enough to make calls, then what is the harm in picking up the phone?
In the end, I think it is safe to say that Thomas Brown’s time as the Chicago Bears’ interim head coach will end later today. He will certainly get an interview from the team, but I do not expect it to be more than a courtesy conversation. As for who will get the job on a full-time basis, time will tell who gets tabbed. Buckle in, folks.
