WATCH: Derrick Rose’s Full Retirement Ceremony AND Directorial Debut!

The only thing missing from last night’s Derrick Rose retirement party was a jersey in the rafters. But, fear not, the Chicago Bulls officially announced that is in the works!

The nearly 20-minute-long ceremony was as grandiose as expected. Beginning with a goosebump-raising tribute video, a sea of Chicago red quickly painted the arena. The man of the hour – er, rather, week – was then introduced in familiar fashion. The Bulls’ iconic intro blared through the speakers as public address announce Tim Sinclair let out a “FROM CHICAGO.” High-fiving fans down a long red carpet, Rose eventually met his family and headed to take a seat next to his mother.

Stationed at center court were three familiar faces: Retired broadcaster Neil Funk, play-by-play and catchphrase master Stacey King, and fellow Bulls legend Joakim Noah. Funk and King got things started before Noah did what he does best. The big man delivered an emotional speech that made everyone in the arena want to run through a brick wall with tears in their eyes. Rose included.

After embracing his former teammate, Rose made his directorial debut. A short film titled “Becoming a Rose” played for the 22,000+ over the United Center’s obnoxiously large scoreboard. A few sniffles were the only noises that came from the crowd over the next two minutes.

Then, as he has done many times before, it was time for Rose to close things out. The hometown hero grabbed the mic and asked to speak directly to the kids in the room. He preached the same message he sends to his own children – to be “good not great.” As if emotions weren’t high enough, the cameras caught Rose’s son, PJ, fighting back tears.

The ceremony didn’t tie a bow on Derrick Rose’s story. He made that clear. But it felt like the fitting end to a chapter so many people have played a part in. If you missed it, I can’t recommend watching it enough!

The Bulls posted the entire ceremony on their YouTube page here, and you can also find it below.
