ESPN viewers fume at controversial national anthem before Browns-Ravens game

ESPN viewers were left fuming after a controversial national anthem before the Browns vs Ravens match.

The Ravens came out on top 35-10 to top the AFC North with a 12-5 record.

But the match was overshadowed before it even kicked off thanks to what fans labelled a terrible national anthem performance.

Country Rock artist Jimmy Charles had the honor of singing ‘The Star Spangled Banner’.

And although fans inside the stadium cheered along, those watching at home were less than impressed.

One criticised the performance, saying: “Jimmy Charles sounds like a regular American singing the national anthem in front of his bathroom mirror.”

Another added: “Jimmy Charles is a horrible singer lmao is he a paid musician?”

A third wrote: “If you heard the Jimmy Charles national anthem, you may be entitled to compensation.”

And another commented: “Please don’t let Jimmy Charles sing the anthem again.”

The Ravens are into the play-offs after winning four games on the bounce.

They dominated the Browns, winning every quarter with five touchdowns scored.

However they have been embroiled in controversy in recent weeks after cornerback Marlon Humphrey was fined by the NFL.

The three-time NFL Pro Bowl defender was fined for a gesture he made in a match against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero reported Sunday that the NFL fined Humphrey $11,255 for unsportsmanlike conduct (taunting).

During the fourth quarter of the divisional clash, Humphrey picked off Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson and returned it 37 yards for a game-clinching touchdown.

Humphrey held the ball toward Pittsburgh wide receiver Calvin Austin II while running it back.

The refs didn’t call a taunting foul on Humphrey, but the league believed he was taunting Austin – hence the fine punishment.

After the game, Humphrey claimed he didn’t taunt Austin and tried to toss the football to a teammate.

“I want to make this pretty clear,” Humphrey said. “When I was running with the football, I saw [Ravens linebacker] David Njabo, a really great teammate of mine, and I was trying to pitch him the football.

“Some people brought up to me that it looked like taunting or something, but I was trying to pitch him the football.

“There was no taunting there at all. I just want to make that very clear.”
