Biden Awards Messi Presidential Medal of Freedom

Lionel Messi, the captain of Inter Miami CF, received the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Joe Biden. This honor places Messi among 19 distinguished leaders recognized for their exceptional contributions.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian award in the United States, bestowed upon individuals who have significantly advanced the nation’s prosperity, values, or security, as well as contributed to world peace and other notable public or private efforts.

Messi is well-known for his philanthropic work through the Leo Messi Foundation, which focuses on supporting healthcare and education initiatives for children globally. Additionally, he holds the role of UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, further emphasizing his commitment to social causes.

Prior to the ceremony, Messi expressed to the White House that he felt deeply honored by this recognition and considered it a tremendous privilege. Unfortunately, he was unable to attend the event due to scheduling conflicts and prior commitments. In his absence, Messi conveyed his gratitude for the accolade and expressed hope for a future meeting. His representatives issued a statement through Inter Miami, clarifying that Messi had a prior engagement.

According to the statement, "The White House informed FIFA, which then communicated with the club at the end of December that Leo would be receiving this honor."

Messi's letter to the White House highlighted his appreciation for the award, stating that while he is honored, he regrettably could not be present due to scheduling conflicts. He reiterated his gratitude and looked forward to an opportunity to meet soon.

The award is conferred upon individuals who have made "exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public, or private endeavors," as noted by the White House.

Lionel Messi is celebrated as the most decorated player in professional soccer history. His achievements include winning the Ballon d'Or—the most prestigious individual accolade in football—eight times. Notably, he is the first male soccer player and the first Argentine to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Although Messi did not attend the ceremony, his representatives reaffirmed that he was unable to participate due to prior obligations. Currently, Messi plays for Inter Miami, a Major League Soccer team co-owned by former England captain David Beckham.

The White House emphasized that Messi was awarded the medal for being "the most decorated player in the history of professional soccer," highlighting his philanthropic efforts through the Leo Messi Foundation and his role with UNICEF. This honor underscores the significant impact he has made in both sports and humanitarian efforts globally.
