A FORD driver was left stunned after hearing an unexpected noise coming from their truck.
While the “retro sound” might be nostalgic to some, it’s actually a warning chime used to alert drivers of a genuine problem.
In a video posted to TikTok that has now racked up more than 4.2 million views, Ford driver Tommy reveals to viewers the old-school chime his vehicle started to produce when he opened the door.
Predominantly a feature on cars between 2009 and 2014, it’s a sound that appears to invoke feelings of nostalgia among viewers.
One commenter on TikTok even wrote: “Lowkey nostalgic.”
But Tommy felt differently about the chime, as he filmed himself angrily slamming the truck’s door to make the sound stop, captioning his video: “Bro forgot it’s 2024.”
Despite that, the chime continued to play, much to Tommy’s confusion.
According to Ford, the chime will play to alert the driver each time they open the car’s door and is designed to enhance driver safety and awareness.
The Ford chime will play for a number of simple reasons, including as a reminder of an open door, an unfastened seatbelt, or if the headlights are left on.
It could even indicate low fuel or oil levels.
Commenters on TikTok had a number of suggestions for the sound.
One said: “That’s usually because the stereo is off; it takes some time to turn on the system so it uses the dash chime as the replacement chime.”
Another wrote: “It’s because the old chime is built inside the system, while the new chime is built inside the speakers.”
Users on Ford forums often report the sound as well, with the general consensus being that the chime plays when the battery is low.
However, it remains unclear why it’s an older sound played by a new Ford vehicle.
Again, theories were written out by viewers on TikTok, with one writing: “Basically the old chime is a backup if the new software chime fails.”
Another wrote: “I think that’s an Easter egg Ford put in to remind people of their older models.”
A third simply said: “90s Ford chime is better.”
This comes as truck fans were left saddened by the discontinuation of a popular Nissan pickup.
The Japanese automaker will stop producing its Titan trim in 2025 – as its 2024 edition marks the final model to enter the company’s showrooms.
The Nissan Titan was first introduced in December 2003 to compete with General Motors, Ram, and Ford‘s dominant pickup status in the United States.
The full-size pickup, equipped with a V-8 engine, came in four trims, its two-door Regular Cab, the King Cab with four doors that could seat up to six people, and the fully loaded Crew Cab.
However, after two decades on the market, Nissan pulled the plug on its popular pickup due to low sales.
