Bulls Send Matas Buzelis, Julian Phillips to G League (But I Wouldn’t Freak Out)

The Chicago Bulls announced on Friday afternoon that Matas Buzelis and Julian Phillips have been assigned to the G League.

The decision comes after both players have seen a slight dip in minutes over the last four games. Buzelis has averaged nearly 13.0 minutes of action during this stretch after seeing nearly 18.5 minutes in his previous 13 contests. As for Phillips, he has averaged under 10.0 minutes during his last four games after averaging roughly 15.0 since mid-November.

This will be the second stint for Buzelis in the G League this season, while it will be the first for Phillips. Nevertheless, I wouldn’t expect either player to be there for long.

Bulls Send Two to G League

While the announcement always throws some fans for a loop, I wouldn’t worry about Buzelis or Phillips hanging around with the Windy City for an extended stretch. The Bulls have had two days off after their ugly loss to the Washington Wizards on Wednesday night. Considering the Windy City Bulls suit up this evening in Hoffman Estates, this is likely an opportunity for Billy Donovan to give them some extra run.

Indeed, their minutes have dropped a tad in recent games, but they have still very much remained a consistent part of the rotation. The Bulls will likely need them available for Saturday’s meeting with the New York Knicks, who have some excellent size and versatility at the wing. Windy City does play again on Saturday night, however, so I suppose it’s not out of the question that one or both hang around for another game.

If Buzelis and Phillips suit up later tonight, you should be able to catch the game on Chicago Sports Network Plus. I’m sure the Windy City Bulls social will also share highlights throughout the game. For what it’s worth, Buzelis had himself quite the game in his last (and first) appearance with Windy City this season. The rookie posted 23 points and 10 rebounds on 11-21 shooting back in November.
