Jaylon Feels the Love, Darnell Wright’s Underrated Season, Pro Bowl Snubs, and Other Bears Bullets

It isn’t really a “New Year’s Resolution” because I have been doing this for about a month now, but I’d like to continue using Saturday as a day to cook myself a satisfying meal. This week: Chili! Here is the recipe I’ll use via my friend Jim. Leftover chili for lunch pairs well with a Bears-Packers noon kickoff.

I can’t believe we’ve just about reached the end of the line for the 2024 Chicago Bears season. Time flies when you have a five-week head start on finding a new head coach and are projected to have a top-10 pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. The 2024 season began with so much promise before spiraling out of control in ways that we feared it might (but hoped wouldn’t) when Matt Eberflus was retained as head coach. And now, we’re left in a position we know all too well — one in which we enter Week 18 with one eye on the offseason. At this time next year, we’ll be putting the finishing touches on Year 1 of a new head coach and Year 2 of the Caleb Williams Experience. Hopefully, we’ll be closer to resolving the Bears’ stadium issue. After all, 2026 is the year Chicago’s football team could break its lease with the city of Chicago for $84 million. Cornerback Jaylon Johnson earning a Pro Bowl starter’s spot is a silver lining in the dark cloud hovering over this team right now. Johnson earning a second consecutive trip to the NFL’s all-star weekend on the strength of votes of players and coaches is something that feels significant to me. I don’t want to take too much away from it. But I feel as if CB1 getting some well-deserved respect from his peers and coaches around the league is nice.

    — Bleacher Nation Bears (@BN_Bears) January 3, 2025 Former Bears who made this year’s Pro Bowl team: Edge rusher Khalil Mack (2018-21), linebacker Roquan Smith (2018-22), long snapper Andrew DePaola (2017). Guys the Bears could have signed in free agency this past offseason who made this year’s Pro Bowl team: Safety Xavier McKinney, edge rusher Jonathan Greenard, running back Josh Jacobs. Over at ESPN, Benjamin Solak and Seth Walder run through some Pro Bowl snubs. As you might expect, there are no Bears among the snubs. I wouldn’t go as far as to suggest Darnell Wright is a Pro Bowl snub, but the second-year right tackle is having a solid year. He grades out at 19th overall among all tackles at Pro Football Focus and has the 10th-best run-blocking grade among his peers. The reality is that I don’t think Wright would’ve gotten Pro Bowl recognition (even if he was deserving) because of the overall state of the offensive line. Better luck next year, Darnell. © Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images Bill Zimmerman (Windy City Gridiron) asks who was the Bears’ second-best player this season. I was surprised to see his answer was what mine would have been had the question been posed to me. The Bears’ defensive collapse after Andrew Billings went on injured reserve showcases how well he was playing before his season-ending injury — and how badly this team needs to improve its defensive line depth this offseason. The Chicago Sun-Times’ Bears experts lay out picks and predictions for the team’s Week 18 finale against the Green Bay Packers. Chris Emma (670 The Score) offers up three storylines to follow for those of you who are brave enough to turn into a game that means so little to so many.

Our friends at BN Cubs are thinking about pitching philosophy and creative rotation usage. Watching the World Juniors hockey tournament might help explain why David Carle is at the top of Tab Bamford’s target list for the next Blackhawks head coach.
