PATRICK Mahomes will not play in NFL Week 18.
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has made it known that he will not be playing his star quarterback.
The Chiefs have already locked in their path to the Super Bowl after going 15-1 so far in the regular season.
Another win or loss won’t change their position as the No. 1 seed in the AFC.
Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs will have home-field advantage through the AFC Championship if they make it that far.
Because of this advantage, it makes more sense for the team to rest their starters and potentially take a loss than to play everyone and risk a major injury.
Mahomes is part of this group that is resting in the final week, and Reid explained the decision to reporters.
“It wasn’t a hard decision,” he said.
“I’ve been through that before. So, I’m not too worried about [losing rhythm].
“It gives the other guys an opportunity to grow. Carson will be the starting quarterback.
“We’ll kind of work things from there about who goes and who doesn’t go.”
Multiple other big names were also listed as limited or non-participants for Chiefs practice this week.
Chris Jones, Mecole Hardman, Mike Pennell, and Trent McDuffie were all limited.
Chris Jones, Isaiah Pacheco, and Jawaan Taylor did not practice.
While the Chiefs resting starters doesn’t impact their place in the playoffs, it is still hugely impactful for the AFC as a whole.
There are three teams still in contention for the No. 7 seed in the AFC side of the playoffs, and they all hinge on the Chiefs game.
Those teams are the Denver Broncos, Miami Dolphins, and Cincinnati Bengals.
Week 18 schedule changes
The NFL has announced the complete schedule for Week 18 of the regular-season.
It will feature a prime time showdown between the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings on Sunday night with everything on the line.
The winner will be crowned NFC North champions and No. 1 seed for the playoffs, while the loser of the clash on Sunday at 8.20 pm ET will have to settle for a wild card spot.
Week 18 begins with a Saturday double header on ESPN and ABC.
The Baltimore Ravens take on the Cleveland Browns at 4.30 pm ET before the Cincinnati Bengals travel to the Pittsburgh Steelers at 8 pm ET.
Eight games will be played at 1 pm ET on Sunday.
Five more will follow at 4.25 pm ET – including the Kansas City Chiefs at the Denver Broncos.
The Broncos’ path is the simplest. All they have to do is beat the Chiefs’ backups and they make the playoffs.
The Dolphins and Bengals need some extra help to get in.
For Miami, they need to win against the New York Jets this week and the Broncos to lose against the Chiefs.
The Bengals have the hardest path. They need to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers this weekend and for the Dolphins and Broncos to lose their matchups.
Despite no Mahomes in the game, all eyes will be on the Chiefs this weekend to determine the last spot in the playoffs.
