THE Dallas Cowboys face a major quarterback decision for Week 18 which could cost them $500,000.
Cooper Rush has led the team since Dak Prescott suffered a season-ending injury in Week 9.
Rush, 31, has led a mini revival on the team from 3-7 to 7-9 in recent weeks.
And if he plays on Sunday against the Washington Commanders, he’ll be in line for a huge check.
Rush has a contract clause that earns him $500,000 if he plays in 55 per cent of the team’s snaps this season.
And he earns $250,000 for playing 45 per cent of the snaps.
Heading into Week 18, Rush has played 52.5 per cent of the downs under center.
He’ll likely need to play most of the Week 18 game to hit the $500,000 jackpot.
The money represents a huge bonus on his two-year, $6 million deal with the Cowboys.
If Rush is benched, then Trey Lance could start at quarterback.
Rush beat out Lance for the job when Prescott was injured during the season.
Head coach Mike McCarthy didn’t discuss the quarterback situation in his press conference this week.
McCarthy also faced questions on his own future with his contract expiring on January 14.
He said, “I do appreciate the opportunity to speak on it.
“I’ve answered this question the same for however many months now, so I think the focus, I need to make sure I’m doing exactly what I’m asking everyone else to do.
“We need to finish the race.
“It’s been a challenging year, based on our contract situation for coaches.
Week 18 schedule changes
The NFL has announced the complete schedule for Week 18 of the regular-season.
It will feature a prime time showdown between the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings on Sunday night with everything on the line.
The winner will be crowned NFC North champions and No. 1 seed for the playoffs, while the loser of the clash on Sunday at 8.20 pm ET will have to settle for a wild card spot.
Week 18 begins with a Saturday double header on ESPN and ABC.
The Baltimore Ravens take on the Cleveland Browns at 4.30 pm ET before the Cincinnati Bengals travel to the Pittsburgh Steelers at 8 pm ET.
Eight games will be played at 1 pm ET on Sunday.
Five more will follow at 4.25 pm ET – including the Kansas City Chiefs at the Denver Broncos.
“It’s stating the obvious, but we’ll have time to talk about that next week.”
McCarthy added, “I think the future is bright and we have a lot of things in place here.
“We need to take a step back after next week, and obviously a lot of decisions got to be made, a lot of business decisions got to be made because of our contract situation, and that’s what we’ll do.”
Owner Jerry Jones was also asked about the head coach situation.
“What I’m not going to do is to get into any indication one way or the other that I’m not interested in having Mike back,” Jones said.
“I don’t want that to be the case at all.
“We got this game ahead of us, but I’ll assure you I’ve been for weeks thinking about how we’ll go forward after this season.”
