Kirby Smart and Georgia are trailing Notre Dame 13-3 at halftime of the Sugar Bowl on Thursday.
The halftime decision could have been just 6-3 if not for an unfortunate close to the half for the Bulldogs. After Notre Dame kicked a field goal to go up 6-3 in the final minute of the half, the Bulldogs decided to be aggressive and try to get more points on the board with their final series.
That decision backfired immediately.
Gunner Stockton fumbled the ball on Georgia’s first play of the series. Notre Dame recovered and was able to tack on a touchdown on the very next play to make it 13-3 going into the break.
During his brief halftime interview on ESPN, Kirby Smart addressed the decision to be aggressive offensively rather than just kneel out the remaining clock. Smart said UGA “probably regrets” the decision to stay aggressive in that spot.
“We tried to be aggressive in 2-minute and probably regret it — go to the half 6-3,” Smart said. “We wanted to show confidence in our quarterback and let him go play. We didn’t get the block we needed to get and they made a good play.”
In the aftermath of that decision, Smart received a good amount of criticism on social media from both Georgia fans and neutral observers. Smart was also criticized for Georgia’s general performance in the first half, particularly on the offensive side of the ball.
Here’s some of that reaction:
Not sure if Kirby Smart has his presentation ready for his Nike COY clinic talk yet, but… he could just show the last three minutes of this to show how to not manage end of a half with an inept QB against an offense you’re dominating
— Bud Elliott (@BudElliott3) January 2, 2025Notre Dame looks way more physical than Georgia.Which is weird to say about a Kirby Smart team.
— Albert Breer (@AlbertBreer) January 2, 2025The Achilles heel of Kirby Smart will always be 1) how predictive he is at play calling and 2) his lack of aggression with his play calling. #NDvsUGA
— Nic Williams (@Nic20Williams) January 2, 2025Kirby Smart is not a good in game coach. You have a young quarterback. Run the ball get to half
— I’m Greg Shaker Dammit (@GregShaker) January 2, 2025Kirby smart can’t keep being predictable by running it on first and second and trying to throw it on 3rd. Open the darn play book #NDvsUGA
— Nic Williams (@Nic20Williams) January 2, 2025Etienne fumble, P. Jones & Kirby. 3 catastrophic F-ups.
— Brian Edwards (@vegasbedwards) January 2, 2025I don’t like that play calling. At all…
— Bobby (@BobbyWilson1004) January 2, 2025run the ball and let the clock run out unless you get a big play on first down .. only bad things can happen therejust dumb by Kirby Smart and Georgia
— TBD ?? (@YoungBuck_21) January 2, 2025And one play after the fumble, Notre Dame has a touchdown. And in a game such as this, that could be all the difference. I love Kirby Smart but think he made a terrible choice trying to get points before halftime.
— Owen (@Alakazam_428) January 2, 2025I’m sorry but all the people complaining about Kirby’s aggressive call that happened to lead to a fumble would be praising his brilliance if we stole a field goal before half.He made a decision. It happened to not work. Hindsight is 20/20. Let’s ride. Go Dawgs ?⚫️
— Back-to-Back National Champion (@georgiadawg99) January 2, 2025Kirby Smart throwing the football with a backup quarterback with 33 seconds left in the half. What did you think would happen ? Make it make sense smh. #SugarBowl
— Zac ? (@ZacCanada) January 2, 2025Idk WTH Kirby Smart was thinking….he probably just lost his team the game. Passing with 35 seconds left from your own 20 with an inexperienced QB. Just stupid.
