Xavier Watts clowned after going down with apparent fake injury vs. Georgia

Xavier Watts went down with an apparent foot injury midway through the 2nd quarter of the Sugar Bowl on Thursday.

While that would normally be a cause for concern for the Fighting Irish, a closer look at the incident shows a different story. Watts was sprinting off the field with his right shoe in hand when he decided to hit the turf and seek medical attention.

Watts’ injury briefly stopped the game. Crucially, it also halted Georgia’s momentum after the Bulldogs had just moved the chains with a 21-yard completion.

Here’s a look at Watts as he was running off the field before going down:

like I said… the fakest “injury” ever by Notre Dame’s Xavier Watts pic.twitter.com/w50uqG74ZP

Watts was required to miss the next play by NCAA rule, but was back in for the Fighting Irish defense after serving that brief ban from the field. Georgia ended up being forced to punt on that series.

Feigning injuries was a hot topic earlier this season, particularly in the SEC. League commissioner Greg Sankey put a stop to it midway through the year, though, with a memo threatening significant punishments for any teams or players found to be faking injuries in SEC games. That doesn’t necessarily extend to CFP contests, however.

Here’s some of the strong reaction on social media to Watts’ apparent fake injury:

If there was a highlight example of a fake injury, Xavier Watts would the #1. He went down because Georgia was going fast and he didn’t have a shoe on his left foot. I mean that’s so bad

Is Xavier Watts hurt no Did his shoe fall off yes

This is the most blatant fake injury you will ever see by Notre Dame… He was signaling for someone to come in.. dude was sprinting and then went down.

Gunner is cooking so Notre Dame needs to fake an injury real quick. #GoDawgs pic.twitter.com/nzal8HvpUp

I think there’s an easy solution for the fake injury epidemic in CFB: if the game is stopped for you, you’re out for the remainder of that possession. Coaches can decide if the deception is worth missing the talent on the field for a lengthy drive.

Ah another fake injury to slow down play

Make injury timeouts reviewable. If it’s obviously a fake injury like we can see on TV, charge that team a timeout. #NDvsUGA

This is how u get rid of fake injury’s in college or pro football. If the player goes down he sits out for the game of 10 minutes from the game clock. If he is so hurt and can’t get off the field then he needs time to get better. @NCAAFootball

    — The Real Deal Lee McLean (@ALeeMcLean) January 2, 2025

College football really needs to change rules to allow unsportsmanlike penalties for faking injuries. Notre Dame player loses a shoe, runs across the field, then collapses with a fake injury as GA trying to go hurry up. Absurd. And these BS fake injuries happened all year…

Homeboy lost his shoe and faked an injury because he couldn’t get off the field in time. The pure definition of when faking an injury should draw a flag.

That fake injury from number 0 on ND was ridiculous. It genuinely killed our momentum and then the broadcast and commentators just quickly move on and try to brush past it. THAT CANNOT BE ALLOWED NCAA
