News is a public good, and everyone deserves access to quality news and information whether they can afford to pay for them or not. These are the core values that have guided the Colorado Sun since we founded our statewide news outlet in 2018.

    We have more than doubled the size of our staff in the past six years, became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and established ourselves as a trusted news source for thousands of Coloradans. We have a pile of awards, earned in competition with Colorado’s largest news organizations, that attest to the excellence we produce daily.

    More than 13,000 Coloradans have joined our Sun community as paying members, and more than a thousand have stepped up as donors since our conversion to nonprofit in late 2023. The Sun serves about a million unique visitors to our website each month and more than 100,000 subscribers to our various free and paid newsletters.

We need an experienced, mission-driven Membership Director with vision, integrity and the drive to help us expand our team and ensure our sustainability well into the future.     POSITION SUMMARY

    The Membership Director will be responsible for the further development, implementation and growth of The Sun’s membership program. The Membership Director will use comprehensive data analytics to craft and execute membership initiatives and gauge their effectiveness. The director will help oversee the membership marketing budget to ensure that funds are well spent and produce measurable results. 

    The director, in coordination with Sun leadership, will be a key member of our team who manages Sun membership marketing and retention efforts across multiple platforms, including email, social media, paid media and our website. 

    Reporting to the Development Director, the Membership Director will have strategic and operational responsibility for membership activities. The Membership Director will also work closely with our General Manager and Publisher.

    RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE

    Meet growth and revenue targets for newsletter audience and paying members, as well as retain membership Identify and measure metrics key to membership conversion success Create new ways to drive and maintain membership growth through engagement, products, experiences, messaging, distribution and marketing Curate a best-in-class member journey Build and execute a strategic plan to propel our successful membership program to its next level of engagement and success Vet the tech stack powering The Sun’s membership program and lead its evolution Interact with and support members, either online or in-person Work with community partners on annual membership drive initiatives Support the end-to-end reader experience from awareness to conversion Provide timely reports to leadership on membership efforts Reports to the Development Director

    Qualifications & Experience

    The ideal candidate will be entrepreneurial and embrace The Sun’s journalism and mission to ensure Coloradans have access to deeply reported, nonpartisan journalism that helps them understand our state and its people. This person will understand the difference between members who align with our mission and more transactional subscribers and then be able to conceive and execute membership initiatives that recognize those dynamics. This candidate will be as adept at developing partnerships with large institutions to create group memberships as they are at using metrics to understand how to reach individual members through top-of-the-funnel marketing campaigns.

    The minimum qualifications for Membership Director candidates are:

    A minimum of three years experience in marketing in the nonprofit sector   Ability to manage short- and long-term projects in an environment with shifting deadlines Experience managing a marketing budget Excellent written and verbal communication skills Strong proficiency with computers and cloud-based applications including spreadsheets, word processing and database systems A proven ability to build and manage campaigns that drive membership and subscriptions  Exceptional organizational skills and a proven ability to work collaboratively with others Personal qualities of integrity, credibility and a passion for The Colorado Sun’s mission

    Ideal Membership Director candidates also have some of these preferred experiences and attributes:

    Knowledge of social media, website and email analytics using tools such as Piano, Parse.ly, Google Analytics and email newsletter platforms such as Mailchimp A strategic understanding of the full customer marketing life cycle (trial, conversion, purchase/upgrade and retention) Experience leading consumer marketing for an entrepreneurial and collaborative organization  Familiarity with the effectiveness and efficiency of multiple marketing channels in a marketing plan: paid and earned media, social media, affiliate and partnership marketing A successful track record building consumer revenues for digital content, e-commerce, or related businesses The ideal candidate will play a pivotal role in building and enhancing audience connection, from inception of campaigns to successful completion Bachelor’s degree or exceptional professional experience

    Salary & Benefits

    The salary range for the development director is $90,000 to $115,000, based on prior experience and skillset.
