Like every other year I’ve spent on planet Earth with my fellow humans, 2024 was full of both joys and frustrations. But also like every other year I’ve spent in Mendocino County, 2024 was full of magical moments – because really, how could you NOT find magic in a place full of forests, fog, banana slugs and secret waterfalls?
Here is my list of favorite moments in Mendocino County last year:
Five: Horses in the mist: The entire Mendocino Coast is pretty magical, so I honestly cannot imagine not finding a bit of magic on every visit. But one day last fall I found one of my favorite sights, fog draped over water, along the Big River Beach near Mendocino, and while I was still soaking in the fog, a group of women came and began exercising their horses on the sand, creating a dream-like scene in an already dreamy place.
Four: Paths of peace: I lost two cats this year, with the first death being the most horrific, since it was completely unexpected and happened right in front of me. But the next morning, my friend showed me some magical paths at a monastery in Redwood Valley, where I found some much-needed solace after the loss of the sweetest soul I’ve lived with. Three: Off-grid adventure: Rural Mendocino County is full of people living “off the grid,” but other than a week-long power outage in 2019, I had not experienced life without electricity until I spent a night with some fine folks in Redwood Valley last fall. Every bit of my stay was an adventure I will never forget, from the seemingly hours-long wait for our potatoes to bake, the brightness of the stars and moon peeking out from behind the hills full of oak trees, and, of course, sleeping in one of those trees.

When I visited the falls the water was reduced to a trickle, but it still offered one of the most magical afternoons I’ve had in Mendocino County.
One: Dancing with Redwoods: By far the most magical experience I had in 2024, and perhaps ever in Mendocino County, was watching Dance the Redwoods, a sublime mixture of music, movement and nature offered by the Mendocino Dance Project.

I saved this magical moment for last: An impromptu hike in Van Damme State Park to celebrate my birthday in which I was given the best surprise gift possible: Meeting dozens of cool banana slugs of all sizes and colors along the trail.
