ESPN viewers noticed Arizona State running back Cam Skattebo had to carry out an unfortunate act on the sidelines of Wednesday’s Peach Bowl.
The 22-year-old Skattebo endured the moment during the Sun Devils’ 39-31 double-overtime loss to the Texas Longhorns in the CFP playoff quarterfinal.
Before the start of the fourth quarter, ESPN’s broadcast revealed that Skattebo was “vomiting profusely” on Arizona State’s sideline.
He was visibly uncomfortable and breathing hard during the TV sequence.
The network reported that Skattebo was trying to get in more fluids, which left his health status for the rest of the game uncertain.
Skattebo would enter the game and help lead a comeback to force overtime.
The Sun Devils ultimately lost the game, but social media users reacted to Skattebo’s “gruesome” act on the sidelines.
“He put it all out there for sure,” one commented.
“Why is it OK for him to do this on New Year’s Day but frowned upon when I do it?” another jokingly asked.
“Clearly sick of doing it all,” a third wrote.
The Sun Devils scored 16 unanswered points in the second half.
Skattebo and Arizona registered their first touchdown midway through the fourth quarter.
The play occurred when on fourth-and-2 from the Texas 42-yard line, Skattebo received a pitch and then threw a pass to Malik McClain on a trick play.
The Sun Devils then secured the two-point conversion to make it 24-16 with 6:31 left.
Skattebo wasn’t done showing off his talents.
After Quinn Ewers threw an interception, Skattebo caught a 62-yard pass from Sam Leavitt.
The running back then ended the drive with a run into the endzone to cut the lead to 24-22 before tying the game with a two-point conversion.
How the 12-team CFP works
The first ever 12-team College Football Playoff kicks off on Friday, December 20.
But who will get in?
The highest four ranked conference champions will all be guaranteed a first-round bye into the quarterfinals around New Year.
The fifth highest ranked conference champion will also be assured a place, regardless of if they’re ranked in the top 12 teams in the nation.
That ensures a champion from one of the second tier of conferences will get a chance to play for the national championship.
Teams seeded five through eight will host a first round playoff game on Friday, 20 or Saturday 21 December.
And they will go up against the teams seeded nine through 12.
All of these rankings and seedings are decided by the CFP committee – based on record and strength of schedule among other factors.
This year’s National Championship Game will take place on Monday, January 20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.
Skattebo also gave his team the lead with a three-yard touchdown to start overtime against the Longhorns.
However, Texas answered back with two straight touchdowns to take the lead 39-31.
Arizona State couldn’t respond, failing to score on their next overtime possession to hand the Longhorns the win.
Skattebo finished the day with 30 carries for 143 yards and two touchdowns, seven receptions for 86 yards, and a passing touchdown.
