I recently got the iPhone 16 Pro Max and always prefer to keep a case and screen protector on my phone. This helps maintain its appearance for as long as possible. I also participate in the Apple Upgrade program, so when I turn the phone back in, I don’t risk any issues since the phone is always protected. I started by unpacking the contents of the tempered glass screen protector. Inside, I found two microfiber cloths, two alcohol wipes, two dust remover tabs, two templates, and two glass protectors.
I have never been the best at applying these, but thankfully, the plastic clip-on template included by RokForm makes it much easier to get it on perfectly. Once installed, I cleaned my screen with the included microfiber cloth and wipe. From there, I carefully examined the screen to remove any dust with the included dust-removing tab. Finally, I pulled the protective adhesive backing from the glass itself and installed it right into the template. It installed perfectly, with only a few small bubbles that I was able to push out using a credit card.
Next, I moved on to the case, starting with the crystal-clear version. The box opens like a drawer, allowing the case to slide out from the side. Inside, there’s a small booklet, the case itself, and an extra black cover to increase the magnetic strength of the “RokLok” accessories. Installing the case was a breeze; it just snaps right onto the phone. After checking out the crystal-clear version, I switched to the black rugged version. This case feels equally protective, and size-wise, it’s the same as the crystal-clear version.
The black case features a carbon fiber texture on the back, and the ring and magnetic line are made from a much stronger material—a much-needed improvement from the iPhone 15 version. It almost feels like a tough silicone instead of the thin material used previously.
Usage
I have never been one to drop-test cases and phones like some other reviewers, but after over a month of regular usage, I have had my share of accidental drops. One incident worth mentioning occurred when I accidentally dropped my phone into a wet puddle outside. Thankfully, the case handled it very well; the tough corners of the case showed hardly any damage, just a small nick on one. The clear back allowed me to see that no water had entered the case. Fortunately, in today’s smartphone era, all iPhones have some level of water resistance, so the phone itself was fine.
Personally, I am not a fan of bulkier cases, and I would consider this one to be on the thicker side, measuring ½ inch in thickness. However, this is merely my personal preference; I know many others who love thick cases. RokForm seems to have addressed this concern from my last review, as they now offer a crystal-clear slim case as well. Unfortunately, the crystal-clear version appears to be quite susceptible to scratches. Despite a few accidental drops, the glass screen protector has held up remarkably well.
RokForm boasts an extraordinarily strong magnet in this case, and I can attest that it truly is impressive. It’s the strongest one I have ever seen. For example, you can stick your phone to any magnetic surface. I managed to impress a coworker by placing the case on top of a metal cash box I use to store money. The box was loaded, making it quite heavy. As I went to pick up my phone, it lifted the entire box with it, still attached to the case. Just for fun, I weighed the box, and it came in at about 6 lbs. Very impressive that the case was able to stay attached while lifting it. I also regularly use a MagSafe wallet, and I’ve noticed that with some other cases, it tends to fall off. However, with the RokForm case, this was not an issue at all; it felt very secure, and took considerable force to remove it.
On the topic of MagSafe, this case seems to be hit or miss. For instance, some MagSafe chargers do not work with this case. Even by using the non-magnetic cover they include in the box. Unfortunately, I discovered this too late; I keep an Anker 3-in-1 charger in my bag, and when connected via MagSafe, the phone does not charge. I know this is due to the case, as it works just fine without it and with other cases.
However, I do have an Anker MagSafe battery pack, and the phone charged with this without issue. Other brands of chargers I tested have also been hit or miss with this case. For anyone invested in MagSafe, this could be a deterrent. RokForm does sell a MagSafe charger that is compatible with this case. It’s also worth noting that while editing this review, I glanced at my original RokForm iPhone 15 Pro Max review, where another concern was the action button not being fully covered. This is something that has been addressed in the iPhone 16 model of this case. It’s truly great to see a company taking customer and reviewer feedback to improve their products.
Pricing
The cases start at $69.99 on RokForm’s website and on Amazon, which is currently offering a 10% discount. The screen protectors start at $29.99 and are also 10% off on Amazon.
