After months of negotiations to keep the health system in-network, the contract between Scripps Health and Anthem Blue Cross officially ended Jan. 1, it was announced Wednesday.
The termination impacts all Anthem commercial and Covered California plans, though emergency care remains in-network and Medicare supplemental plans are unaffected, according to the health system.
In a statement, Scripps said it “proposed to continue negotiations beyond yesterday, but Anthem provided an ultimatum that was unacceptable.”
Scripps said patients can still access care at Scripps but are urged to contact Anthem first to understand how coverage and out-of-pocket costs will change.
The health system is notifying affected patients about continuity of care benefits and emphasizing that emergency services will not result in higher out-of-pocket costs.
Employers offering Anthem benefits are also being notified of the contract termination and may consider adding or changing plans to maintain in-network access to Scripps Health, officials said.
