Family ‘in limbo’ as car vanishes from hotel on their vacation – they just paid it off and now it’s stuck at impound lot

A FAMILY has been left in limbo after their car vanished from a hotel parking lot while they were on vacation.

Worse still, it later emerged their vehicle was involved in a crash and is now being held by police.

The family, from Scottsdale, Arizona, told 12News they drove to Las Vegas on December 20 and spent the night at the Circus Circus Hotel and Casino before flying to Canada for the holidays.

They left their vehicle parked at the hotel.

Melissa Goins, who was traveling with her wife Lauren Fontaine and their family, said, “I just had this moment of, this is Christmas Eve. Why is this happening?”

Their silver Hyundai Sonata, which Goins purchased in January 2024, was the family’s only vehicle and it meant a lot to them.

“We recently paid off our car. Our car was outright ours and we actually put some work into it,” Goins said.

“We put a brand new engine into the car and a brand new security system as well.”

The car’s security system was part of an anti-theft upgrade for Hyundais and Kias rolled out in light of thousands of thefts nationwide after a major security flaw was exposed on social media.

But it seems the system failed on the Goins’ Sonata, leaving them with no car to drive their son to necessary appointments or to commute to work.

However, Goins later received even worse news about the vehicle.

On Christmas Eve, she got a call from the Las Vegas Police Department.

“An officer was explaining to me that my car had been in a hit-and-run collision and was abandoned,” she said.

“Everyone’s on holiday and I was told by the officer that that’s the ideal time that they like to strike for that reason alone.”

With the car now at the center of a crash investigation, Goins and Fontaine have been unable to get any answers on when their vehicle will be returned or even what kind of state it is in – which in turn has made filing an insurance claim challenging.

“We don’t have any information and I think that that’s what we’re struggling with the most,” Goins said.

“If we knew what was going on with the car, then we would know how to move forward.

“But right now we’re just kind of floating in limbo.”

With the family currently relying on rideshare vehicles to get around, a GoFundMe page has been created to assist this family.

Elsewhere, a driver says she has been vindicated by a settlement after she was slapped with a $87 parking fine despite paying for her spot.

The fuming motorist accused the parking firm that ran the lot for trying to “get money” out of people with excessive charges.
