How Arsenal must overhaul squad: Who Gunners should keep and sell ahead of big transfer year

Arsenal head into an important January transfer window as they look to keep pace with Premier League leaders Liverpool.

The Gunners also face a vital summer after that, with the club keen to kick on under Mikel Arteta.

Arsenal will look to raise funds by selling unwanted players as they look to make space in their squad.

Here, Standard Sport assesses who they should keep and sell.

    Goalkeepers

    David Raya

Arsenal’s No1 and one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League. His shaky start last season is a distant memory. Needs competition and cover. KEEP

    Neto

Signed on loan from Bournemouth but yet to make his debut as cup-tied in the Carabao Cup. Jury still out, but Arsenal will likely look elsewhere for a No2. LET GO AT END OF LOAN

    Tommy Setford

Signed in the summer from Ajax, the 18-year-old made his debut in October at Preston in the Carabao Cup. Tipped for a big future. KEEP

    Defenders

    Ben White

One of Arsenal’s most consistent performers and among the best right-backs in the Premier League. Provides cover at centre-back, too. KEEP

    Gabriel

Formed a strong partnership with William Saliba and a real threat from set-pieces in attack. Deserves a new contract to underline his importance to Arsenal. KEEP

    Jakub Kiwior

A big offer would make it tempting to sell, but he offers cover at centre-back and full-back. Keep him for one more season. KEEP

    Jurrien Timber

Shown this season how badly Arsenal missed him last year. Can play anywhere across the defence, but looks at his best when playing right-back. KEEP

    Kieran Tierney

Has just six months left on his contract. Doesn’t fit the way Arsenal play and has struggled for fitness. Needs a fresh start. SELL

    Myles Lewis-Skelly

Broke into the first-team squad this year and shown what all the fuss is about. Only 18, but has transitioned from midfield to left-back with ease. KEEP

Oleksandr Zinchenko is into the final 18 months of his contract (Getty Images)

    Oleksandr Zinchenko

Into the last 18 months of his contract and this feels like the moment for Arsenal to part ways. No longer a regular under Arteta. SELL

    Riccardo Calafiori

Injuries have halted what has otherwise been a promising start to life at Arsenal. Still only 22 and has so much potential. KEEP

    Takehiro Tomiyasu

A reluctant sell. On his day, the Japan international is an excellent defender – but his injury record means he cannot be relied upon. SELL

    William Saliba

One of the best centre-backs in the world right now and only 23. Arsenal must fight off any interest from Real Madrid in him. KEEP

    Midfielders

    Declan Rice

The future of Arsenal’s midfield. Can play as a No6 or further forward, but looks best when anchoring the midfield and dictating play. KEEP

    Ethan Nwaneri

Only 17, but has scored four goals this season and looks at home on the big stage. Looks like a future superstar. KEEP

Arsenal should only keep one out Jorginho and Thomas Partey (REUTERS)

    Jorginho

Out of contract in summer, but Arsenal should keep him around. At 33, he brings so much experience to a young squad. KEEP

    Martin Odegaard

Arsenal’s captain and creative heartbeat. How vital the Norwegian is to the team was shown earlier this season when he was out injured. KEEP

    Mikel Merino

Had a mixed start after joining in the summer, with a lack of pre-season and injuries impacting him. Needs more time to settle. KEEP

    Thomas Partey

Enjoying his best season, but has struggled with injuries before. Out of contract in the summer, when he will be 32, and Arsenal should only keep one out of him or Jorginho. SELL

    Forwards

    Bukayo Saka

Arsenal’s talisman and the face of the club. Another new contract surely won’t be far away given his numbers this season. KEEP

Gabriel Jesus has hit form recently but is an obvious candidate to offload (AP)

    Gabriel Jesus

Another reluctant sell. Arsenal will need to raise some funds for a new forward and the Brazilian is an obvious candidate to let go of. SELL

    Gabriel Martinelli

Would be interesting to see Arsenal’s stance if a big bid came in. Form has been mixed this season, but at 23 he still has time on his side. KEEP

    Kai Havertz

Reborn in 2024 after being moved upfront. Even if Arsenal sign a new striker, they should keep the German as competition and cover. KEEP

    Leandro Trossard

Proved to be an excellent signing after joining in January 2023. Can play anywhere across the forward line, which makes him valuable. KEEP

    Raheem Sterling

Shown flashes of brilliance, but not enough to justify Arsenal making his loan move permanent. A strong second half of the season could change that. LET GO AT END OF LOAN
