San Diego State has dropped out of the AP Top 25 after the team’s 67-66 weekend loss to Utah State.
The Aztecs (8-3, 1-1) had been No. 20 before the Mountain West showdown. The Aggies (12-1, 2-0) appeared on 14 ballots after the win, but fell short of making the list.
San Diego State still received votes but not enough to beat out Butler at No. 25. The Aztecs face Boise State on the road Saturday.
Tennessee remains No. 1.
The Volunteers received 41 first-place votes from the 61-person media panel in the Associated Press men’s college basketball poll released Monday. No. 2 Auburn had 20 first-place votes. Iowa State, Duke and Alabama rounding out the top five.
The top 13 teams remained unchanged following a week in which 12 ranked teams didn’t play.
Tennessee, among four unbeatens left in men’s Division I basketball, won its lone game of Christmas week, beating Middle Tennessee 82-64 to retain the No. 1 spot for the fourth straight week.
No. 6 Florida (10-0), No. 12 Oklahoma (10-0) and Drake (9-0) also begin this week undefeated.
The Zags and Bruins played the final marquee game of the nonconference season on Saturday, squaring off in the first college basketball game played at Intuit Dome, the new home of the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers.
UCLA held off Gonzaga’s late rally and was rewarded by moving up seven spots to No. 15. Gonzaga dropped five spots to No. 19 with the loss.
No. 24 Mississippi, unlike SDSU, held on to its ranking – barely – dropping eight places following an 87-70 loss to No. 21 Memphis.
The SEC leads all conferences with 10 ranked teams. The Big Ten and Big 12 each have five and the Big East two. The Atlantic Coast, West Coast and American Athletic conferences each have one.
