In Matt Selman's ideal world, The Simpsons would run forever, but all good things must come to an end.
Fans of the long-running animated comedy, now in its 36th season, were in for quite a surprise earlier this fall when the season's premiere appeared to be set to serve as the series finale, too, as Bart found himself entranced by a series of AI-generated illusions exploring the various way the show could end, from Mr. Burns dying to Moe's closing up shop to Principal Skinner's retirement.

The false finale was inspired by frequent discussions about how "hard" it would be "to do a last episode," Selman, the showrunner, told The New York Post in a recent interview. "...it’s sort of an impossible thing.”
“The show isn’t meant to end,” he continued. “To do a sappy crappo series finale, like most other shows do, would be so lame. So we just did one that was like over the top.”
Instead, when the day finally arrives, Selman hopes the series will end with “a regular episode” featuring "a really good story about the family.” Seeing as the characters don't ever get older, he could see them "just pick[ing] an episode and say[ing] that was the last one."
"No self-aware stuff," he clarified. "Or, one self-aware joke.”
The series first aired on Dec. 17, 1989, and has had a rash of eerie predictions come true throughout the years, leading some to joke that the writers must be time travelers, so chances are, the show will ultimately end exactly as Selman pictures it.
