The nuclear-powered USS Carl Vinson and its accompanying guided-missile cruiser and destroyers arrived in Malaysia on Sunday for a scheduled port visit, the Navy announced.
It marks the second visit to Port Klang by a San Diego-based aircraft carrier in just over a month. The USS Abraham Lincoln paid a visit in November on its way back to California from deployment in the Middle East.
The 7,500 sailors aboard the Vinson, cruiser USS Princeton and destroyers USS Sterett and USS William P. Lawrence will participate in cultural exchanges, community relations events, and recreational activities.
“Visiting Port Klang provides us with an important and unique opportunity to collaborate with our Royal Malaysian Navy counterparts, continuing to build upon our strategic and mutually beneficial partnership, while also providing our sailors well-deserved downtime to explore the area and build connections within the community,” said Rear Adm. Michael Wosje, commander of Carrier Strike Group 1.
The U.S. ambassador to Malaysia echoed the importance of the port visit.
“The back-to-back visits of the Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group and the USS Abraham Lincoln to Malaysia underscore the depth and strength of our security ties — an enduring cornerstone of the U.S.-Malaysia Comprehensive Partnership,” said Edgard D. Kagan.
Port Klang is on the key Strait of Malacca, the primary shipping channel between the Indian and Pacific Oceans.
