Imperial Beach’s mayor is tossing her hat into the campaign ring following the announcement that San Diego County Supervisor Nora Vargas will be stepping down.
Paloma Aguirre announced Monday that she plans to run for County Supervisor in District 1, the soon-to-be-vacated South County seat.
“Whether it’s our long-neglected sewage crisis or working people’s financial struggles, our communities are calling out for real leadership and change,” Aguirre said in a statement.
“I’ve fought for change when our communities have been ignored and taken on inaction in both parties, including my own. I’m ready to take that fight to the County level.”
Aguirre has been a prominent voice in the Tijuana River Valley sewage crisis, which has sickened and alarmed residents, and was recently a major part of the effort to secure millions in federal funding to go towards resolving the issue.
She has also pledged to address high costs of living and soaring social inequalities, as well as work toward securing more funding for public safety and housing in South Bay.
Before she entered politics, Aguirre was an environmental advocate and community organizer with the nonprofit organization Wildcoast, as well as a competitive bodyboarder.
Supervisorial District 1, which includes Imperial Beach, Chula Vista, National City, and parts of South San Diego, will be left without representation following Vargas’s sudden resignation announcement. A special election is expected in 2025.
Aguirre has already received a slew of endorsements from local and state legislators, including Sens. Steve Padilla and Catherine Blakespear, Lemon Grove Mayor Alysson Snow, Oceanside Mayor Esther Sanchez, and State Controller Malia Cohen.
