Ruben Amorim admitted it was embarrassing that Manchester United are in a relegation battle after they slumped to yet another defeat.
The dire 2-0 home loss to Newcastle United means Amorim has made the worst start of any United manager in the past 103 years – losing five of his first eight league games.
Even so, Amorim insisted he would not change his 3-4-2-1 system even though he does not have the players to execute it and claimed the current malaise was on him.
“It is also my fault. I think the team is not improving. It is a little bit lost in this moment,” he said. “It is a bit embarrassing to be Manchester United coach and lose a lot of games. But we have to cope with difficult moments in the life of everybody.”
Asked whether, just seven points outside the bottom three, United were in danger of being relegated, the Portuguese said: “That is really clear so we have to fight. It is a really difficult moment, one of the more difficult moments in the history of Manchester United and we have to address it with honesty.”
The Portuguese added: “I am responsible. I don’t like to arrive here and make excuses. I think people are tired of excuses in this club. I think our club needs a shock and we have to understand that. It is a very difficult moment and we have to fight for the next game.”
Manager will not compromise on his system
Despite the run of terrible form, Amorim insisted he will not change his “idea” and compromise on his system.
“I have to sell my idea,” he said. “If I change all the time it is going to be even worse. But I understand they have a lot of difficulties because they spent two years playing one way. You can feel it, I can feel it. But I have to sell my idea, I don’t have another one.
“When you have a change of coach, especially in this type of club, it is because they were not winning. They play in the system they were bought for and were losing. So, I am going to change to that system? If I think the players with the right profile for each position, it will be different. This team was already in problems.”
Amorim will not be able to make significant changes in the forthcoming transfer window unless money is generated.
“We don’t have that possibility in January if we don’t take (sell) some players, you know the situation better than me. It is not that I am arriving here and can spend money changing the team,” he said.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe hailed the win, only his club’s second in the league at Old Trafford since 1972, which lifts them to fifth in the Premier League.
“I think we know the hurt this fixture has had for us historically, it wasn’t lost on us,” he said. “Psychologically it was a big step forward for us we need to win games like this to achieve what we want.”
