The Ruben Amorim era at Manchester United continued to make a shaky start, as the Red Devils lose yet again at Old Trafford. Look back at all the best facts and Opta data from the game with our Man Utd vs Newcastle stats page.
Manchester United’s poor 2024-25 season continued with another defeat, this time going down 2-0 to Newcastle United at Old Trafford.
It took just four minutes for Newcastle to breach the leaky Man Utd defence, but it came as no shock that it was Isak who scored it. The Swede scored for a sixth successive Premier League appearance and it was the eighth goal he’d scored in December 2024 – more than any other player in the competition.
That opening goal meant that it was the seventh time Man Utd have conceded inside the opening five minutes of a Premier League game at Old Trafford since the beginning of 2023 – it only happened seven times between 2013 & 2022.
Only 15 minutes later, Joelinton made it 2-0 to Newcastle, meeting a lovely Anthony Gordon cross with a header past André Onana.
Newcastle first-half dominance was summed up by the fact that all 10 of their outfield players had either attempted a shot or created a chance by the 36th-minute of the match, while Man Utd had only had one in total by this point. Overall, United only managed a single shot on target across the whole match.
For Man Utd, their tally of 22 points after 19 games of the season is their lowest at the halfway point of a 38-game Premier League campaign, while it’s their lowest in a league season at this stage since 1989-90 (also 22).
Ruben Amorim has now lost six of his 11 games as United boss, the worst start by a manager of the club since Walter Crickmer in 1931-32, who lost 7 of his first 11.

Man Utd vs Newcastle Facts – Post-Match
Manchester United lost six games in all competitions in December, only the third month in which they’ve lost six games, after April 1926 (6) and September 1930 (7). They also conceded 18 goals in December, their most in a single month since March 1964 (also 18). Since Rúben Amorim’s first game in charge on November 24, only Southampton (7) have lost more games in all competitions among Premier League clubs than Man Utd (6), while the Red Devils have shipped the joint-most goals (21, level with Spurs). This was only Newcastle United’s third away league win in their last 57 visits to Manchester United (D17 L37), following wins in 1971-72 and 2013-14. Manchester United will end 2024 in 14th place in the Premier League, their lowest position at the turn of a year in the league since 1989, when they ended that year in 15th, eventually finishing 13th.Subscribe to our football newsletter to receive exclusive weekly content.
