Kansas City Chiefs make major bench decision for regular-season finale after Patrick Mahomes sealed playoff spot

THE Kansas City Chiefs have reportedly made a major personnel decision for their regular season finale with the Denver Broncos.

The Chiefs are currently 15-1 and have already clinched a bye in the NFL playoffs.

Earlier this month, Patrick Mahomes, Andy Reid and other members of the organization complained about the hectic Christmas schedule that saw them play three games in just 11 days.

But having come through that test relatively unscathed and with three wins, the Chiefs have now reportedly decided to shut down their starters until their playoff game.

Multiple reports now state that Mahomes, Travis Kelce et al will be benched for the Week 18 game at Mile High.

Having last played on Christmas Day, the move will allow the Chiefs stars to get almost a month’s rest – with Kansas City next playing on either January 18 or 19 at home.

There has been no official announcement from the organization yet, but one is expected this week.

CBS Sports insider Jonathan Jones said: “Twenty-four days of rest is almost unheard of in the NFL, but for some of Kansas City’s starters that’s what they’ll be getting.

“The Chiefs are expected to rest key starters until their playoff game, and that would include Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce and Chris Jones.

“Several other starters will either be inactive or won’t play, and the team is going to work through that this upcoming week as they make that official.”

Fox Sports insider Jay Glazer had the same info and said: “Listen, Kansas City is not going to tell anybody what they’re going to do.

“But I’m going to tell you they’re not playing any of their starters, anybody who’s banged up, anybody like Patrick Mahomes, Chris Jones, if you’ve got a hangnail and you’re a starter, you’re not playing for Kansas City.

“They want to make sure they go into the playoffs healthy.”

Despite the game having little meaning for the Chiefs, it has huge playoff ramifications not only for the Broncos, but the Cincinnati Bengals, Miami Dolphins and Indianapolis Colts.

The Broncos need to win to secure their place in the playoffs, while the other three teams also need a win plus the Broncos – and other teams around them – to lose.
