Sammy to CubsCon, Torkelson Buy-Low-ish, First Base Depth, and Other Cubs Bullets

Today is the return travel day for my trip with the two big kiddos. A very nice time down in Texas, where I actually got to wear t-shirts and shorts for a few days. I certainly get the geographic allure.

It’s official, Sammy Sosa will be at the 2025 Cubs Convention:

    — Chicago Cubs (@Cubs) December 29, 2024 With the two sides having made up, insofar as that was ever necessary, now Sammy can return to CubsCon to what I expect will be some of the loudest cheers in recent memory. The Tigers have said that Colt Keith will move to first base after the Gleyber Torres signing, which means former top overall draft pick Spencer Torkelson is out of a starting job. Yesterday’s Matt Mervis trade then got me thinking about what the Cubs want to do at first base in the event of a Michael Busch injury, which then got me thinking about whether Torkelson could be an interesting buy-low-ish source of right-handed bench power and a back-up option at first base. Still just 25, Torkelson looked like he was turning a corner last year (.233/.313/.446/108 wRC+, 31 homers), but he struggled badly in 2024, and wound up spending half the season at Triple-A. He does have a minor league option year remaining, which makes him all the more attractive as a depth option. Also, even in his very down 2024 season, he did still produce against lefties (.235/.292/.506/122 wRC+). Consider me interested. The big limitation is that he’s a 1B/DH only; there’s no positional versatility there. Elsewhere at first base for the Cubs, in terms of immediate depth, you’re looking at Jonathon Long (huge upside in that bat, but he hasn’t played at Triple-A yet), Moises Ballesteros (the Cubs are going to want him getting more catching reps than playing at first), Owen Caissie (he’s done some work at first but hasn’t actually ever started a game there), and Haydn McGeary (hasn’t been to Triple-A yet, had a down 2024 season). It wouldn’t surprise me at all to see the Cubs use this as an opportunity to add – on a minor league deal, or a waiver claim – one of those 27, 28, 29-year-old bat-only first base guys who’s been at the Triple-A/MLB border for a while without breaking through. It’s kind of a free play, where usually you get a guy who just holds a spot at Triple-A until you need it for a prospect, but sometimes you get a nice Frank Schwindel story, or sometimes – exceedingly rare – you get a Brent Rooker situation. Been a very quiet offseason for Anthony Santander rumors:

    — MLB Trade Rumors (@mlbtraderumors) December 30, 2024 This is meant to say National League (Mets), but setting that aside, I think so often about how RA Dickey failed for 10 years before breaking out at age 35 thanks to his knuckleball. How have we not had another story like that since?

    — Codify (@CodifyBaseball) December 30, 2024 Most importantly RIP to Jimmy Carter, but also this is wild:

Kind of crazy: Babe Ruth hit more homers in Jimmy Carter's lifetime than any currently active player (Stanton leads with 429) t.co/njehvzDWaO

Seriously. Why hasn’t MLB corrected this? Give Armando Galarraga his perfect game. t.co/hPJwSBwDFn

    — OBVIOUS SHIRTS® (@obvious_shirts) December 30, 2024 Enjoyed this:

This Deion Sanders swing against Eric Gagne was ridiculous. This was his first game back too in 2001. What a crazy talent he was. pic.twitter.com/TdCy7zsPMy
