Linda Lavin, Star of Hit 1980s Sitcom Alice, Dead at 87

Linda Lavin, best known for her starring role in the sitcom Alice, which ran from 1976 to 1985, has passed away. She was 87.

The prolific actress' death appears to be rather unexpected, as she was working recently to promote her newest project, No Good Deed. A representative for the actress told Deadline that her cause of death was complications from lung cancer, with which she was recently diagnosed.

    No further details about Lavin's death were shared. The actress appeared bright and happy as she recently promoted her new Netflix show, in which she acted with co-stars Linda Cardellini, O-T Fagbenle, Lisa Kudrow and more.

    Recently, Lavin also appeared in Elsbeth and Bob's Burger, doing voice acting for the latter, while she had a notable role in the comedy B Positive. But Lavin is arguably most recognizable for leading the 1980s sitcom Alice as a widow who starts a new life with her son in Phoenix, Ariz. while working at a local diner.

    The show premiered in 1976 and Lavin earned two Golden Globes for her performance over the years. At the same time, Lavin had a flourishing career in the theatre world, originating roles in plays like The Enemy is Dead, Broadway Bound, the 1997 revival of The Diary of Anne Frank, and The Lyons, among others. She won a Tony Award for her performance in Broadway Bound. 

    Continually acting over the years, some of Lavin's other prominent roles included the sitcoms Room For Two, Conrad Bloom, and Sean Saves The World, as well as appearances in other shows like The O.C., The Good Wife and Brockmire.

    Lavin regularly updated fans on social media and appeared to be quite active, both in her personal and professional life, attending a birthday party for actress Sarah Paulson a couple of weeks ago. 

    The actress' new project, the comedy series No Good Deed, premiered on Netflix on Dec. 12. She is also set to appear in the 2025 comedy One Big Happy Family.
