DENVER (KDVR) — Holiday flight troubles continued Sunday as hundreds of flights were delayed or canceled at Denver International Airport. As of 1 p.m., 309 flights to or from DIA had been delayed, with 8 flights canceled outright.
Saturday also saw a large number of delayed and canceled flights into and out of DIA, with 586 delays and 20 cancellations overall.
In total, 156 – or just over half – of the delayed flights originated at DIA, while 153 were flights to DIA from other airports.
The two largest carriers at DIA, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines, were impacted the most by the flight delays, with over half of the delays being in flights operated by the two carriers.
The following are the five carriers with the most delays as of 1 p.m.:
Southwest Airlines: 127 delays United Airlines: 85 delays SkyWest: 50 delays Frontier Airlines: 15 delays American Airlines: 9 delaysHowever United had the most canceled flights overall.
The following are the cancellations reported at DIA as of 1 p.m.:
United Airlines: 7 canceled flights Southwest Airlines: 1 canceled flightBecause of the sheer volume of flights that DIA sees on a daily basis, the delays only accounted for about 15% of flights into and 15% of flights out of the airport on Sunday, as of 1 p.m.
The busy travel period is expected to continue through Thursday, Jan. 2, 2025, with Monday, Dec. 30 expected to be one of the busiest travel days of the period, according to the airport.
People are encouraged to arrive at the airport at least two hours early for their flights. The busiest hours of the day at the airport are between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., with security seeing the biggest volume of passengers between 6 a.m. and noon and 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.
