Bedard’s Streak, Jones’ Struggles, Schaefer Out of WJC, Prospect Highlights Galore, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

The Blackhawks host the Dallas Stars tonight at the United Center in the penultimate game of the calendar year for the organ-I-zation. Their final game of 2024 will come at Wrigley Field on Dec. 31, Tom Bedard’s birthday. His son, Connor, has 14 points (5 goals, 9 assists) in 13 games thus far in December. And he brings a three-game point streak (two goals, three assists) into the contest this evening. Here’s hoping he can add to that streak in both games left this year.

The Blackhawks have played outdoors plenty, but it’s been a minute since they were featured in a signature event for the NHL. Sportsnet tweeted this graphic with all of the jerseys the Blackhawks have worn outside over the years. Which one is your favorite? Seth Jones is the most polarizing Blackhawks player of this generation. He’s better than many fans will ever give him credit, but there are absolutely areas of his game that rightfully drive folks mad. And, since he came back from his foot injury (when the Blackhawks happened to be riding a three-game win streak), he hasn’t been great and the Blackhawks haven’t won a game. Good story here from Ben Pope about Jones trying to get back on track since the injury.

Seth Jones is a good defenseman — despite what some Blackhawks fans think — but he has struggled in his first three games back from injury."He’s got to find his game."New story analyzing his recent performance and what he's working on: t.co/ecPIbE1HHz

    — Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) December 28, 2024 Unfortunate news for those who have enjoyed watching one of the players who could potentially be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft. Defenseman Matthew Schaefer suffered a broken collarbone and is done for the tournament. That injury is usually a couple months, so that’s a tough one for a really good young player. Bob McKenzie reported the expectation is that Canada will add Sawyer Mynio from Seattle (WHL) in his place.

How about some Blackhawks prospect highlights?

We are soooo back on the prospect highlights now that we’re thru Christmas. There were games involving Blackhawks prospects in the NCAA, OHL and World Juniors on Saturday night. And there were some good looking performances. At the World Juniors, the United States beat Latvia 5-2 on Saturday. Oliver Moore was once again centering the third line for the Americans. He skated 15:08 and picked up an assist with two shots on net. He also won 9 of 13 faceoffs. Thru two games, Moore ranks third in the entire field winning 71.43 percent of his faceoffs. In the college ranks, Denver was down 5-1 to UNLV after two periods last night. Yes, I said Denver was down 5-1 after 40 minutes to an ACHA program. But they came all the way back to tie the game at 6 late in the third. Blackhawks prospect Aidan Thompson scored twice in the third period, including the game-tying sixth goal. Providence beat Northeastern 3-1. John Mustard picked up an assist, extending his personal point streak to three games. He was also credited with a team-high six shots on net. In the OHL, Brantford had a huge night — an 8-2 win over Owen Sound. Marek Vanacker scored this pretty goal and had an assist.

    — Bleacher Nation Blackhawks (@BN_Blackhawks) December 29, 2024 And Nick Lardis added this nasty goal — his OHL leading 30th of the season. He added an assist for a two-point game as well. Yeah… Canada could have used him at the World Juniors…

    — Bleacher Nation Blackhawks (@BN_Blackhawks) December 29, 2024 While I usually keep this section for Blackhawks prospects who aren’t skating in the pro ranks yet, I’m going to shout out Paul Ludwinski who scored his first goal in the AHL last night in the IceHogs’ 4-2 win. Rockford also got goals from Colton Dach, Landon Slaggert and Cole Guttman. Slaggert and Guttman also had assists for multi-point games.
