The Common Habit a Cardiologist Is Begging You to Never, Ever Do

Listen, we like you, and we want you to be around for a long time. As such, it's our moral duty to let you know what will help you live a lengthy, healthy life, especially when it comes directly from the mouths of experts. As such, when a cardiologist literally begs you to stop doing just one specific thing to protect both your heart health and overall health, it's our responsibility to share that with you—especially when it's a habit that about one in five people do every day.

Dr. Jeremy London, MD, a cardiothoracic surgeon based in Savannah, Georgia, urges everyone to never, ever smoke or vape—and if you already do, to quit STAT.

"Smoking directly injures the lining of blood vessels, increases the chance of atherosclerosis and blockages and causes lung cancer. It's probably the single worst thing you can do for yourself," Dr. London said in a recent TikTok video.

He isn't alone in his thinking.

"Quitting smoking is one of the most effective steps for lowering heart attack risk," Dr. Gregory J. Mishkel, MD, MBA, division head of cardiology, co-director of the Cardiovascular Institute and vice president of cardiology operations at Endeavor Health, previously told Parade. "Smokers are twice as likely to have a heart attack compared to non-smokers and the benefits of quitting are almost immediate; within 24 hours, heart attack risk starts to decrease."

Even if you're only a social smoker, it can still do a lot of damage to your health and lifespan, warns Dr. Jayne Morgan, MD, cardiologist and vice president of medical affairs at Hello Heart.

"More and more evidence is pointing to tobacco smoke’s negative effects on the cardiovascular system," Dr. Morgan says. "People are often surprised to hear that smoking even one cigarette increases their risk of a heart attack."

If you think vaping is a safer alternative to smoking cigarettes, we've got bad news for you: Chemicals in vapes, especially certain flavored vapes, have been linked to cancers, and long-term effects of vaping on health still aren't fully known—but considering tobacco in any form is really harmful, experts are confident that none of the effects are good.

Dr. London also advised to cut out another popular vice: Drinking, even in moderation.

"When we drink alcohol, it's broken down into Acetaldehyde and acetate," Dr. London explained. "Acetaldehyde is directly toxic to every single cell in the body, and acetate is just empty calories."

Indeed, alcohol has been directly linked to a higher risk of liver cancer, head and neck cancers, esophageal cancer, mouth and throat cancer, colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer and breast cancer. This is in part because acetaldehyde can damage cell DNA, impacting cell growth. When damaged cells grow out of control, that is cancer, and that's deadly. As such, if you planned on swigging some red wine with dinner for its purported heart health benefits, you'd be better off doing almost anything else instead (especially taking a fart walk afterward, for example)—except smoking or vaping.
