The Genius Caramel Sauce Shortcut We Wish We Knew Sooner

There’s something so satisfying about eating caramel and using it to make desserts—the way its golden, glossy texture drapes over pretzels, cookies and apples, and how its deep, buttery flavor just seems to melt on your tongue. Caramel captures the perfect balance of sweetness and richness, with a hint of smoky depth. But let’s be honest: making caramel sauce can be a sticky mess!

The process of cooking sugar to just the right temperature, and waiting for it to turn that signature amber hue without burning it, requires patience. Once you add butter and cream, the mixture bubbles up dramatically, leaving your kitchen smelling heavenly but often leaving your utensils, pots and countertops sticky and difficult to clean. But when you want to create caramel apples, caramel popcorn, caramel-coated pretzels or just sauce for a scoop of ice cream, having a good caramel sauce is key.

I'll admit that I have never been able to perfect the homemade caramel sauce, so when I found this hack on YouTube, I was elated. Caramel maker Werther's Original US (@WerthersOriginalUS) shared this genius tip and I know it's going to be a game-changer for my desserts this holiday season—and into the new year.

    Werther's Originals Saves the Day

Werther's Original is a classic caramel candy brand named after the German village of Werther. Created in 1909, these creamy, buttery sweets became renowned for their rich, smooth flavor. Today, Werther's offers various caramel treats, from hard candies to soft caramels.

"Homemade caramel sauce has never been easier!" the company wrote in the caption of its YouTube video. "The one-of-a-kind rich taste of Werther's Original Chewy Caramels is perfect for everything from ice cream to dipping your favorite snacks."

I do love Werther's and they remind me of my grandpa. He always had Reese's Mini Cups and Wether's Original Hard Candies in his pocket, and he never hesitated to share with me.

To make this easy caramel sauce, Werther's piles some of its soft caramels into a bowl and melts them in the microwave. They don't go into detail about how to do this, but the best way to melt things like soft caramels and chocolate in the microwave is to cook them in bursts to make sure you don't burn your treats. You can always add a little more cooking time, but if you burn things you're forced to start over.

Start by putting some soft caramels (the hard candies won't work) in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat them in 20-to-30-second bursts, stirring after each burst until the caramels are melted and smooth. In the video, they add a splash of cream to the melted caramels and whisk everything together for an extra smooth, creamy sauce.

Use the caramel sauce for dipping or put it out for your next sundae bar. We're also thinking a brownie sundae with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce is in our future.
