Former Alabama quarterback and wide receiver Rob Ezell, a former player and later offensive assistant under Nick Saban in Tuscaloosa who is currently the offensive coordinator at South Alabama, has emerged as a candidate for the same position on Jake Dickert’s initial staff at Wake Forest, according to FootballScoop’s John Brice.
In 2024, South Alabama was 20th in the country in yards per game (442.3) and was a top 25 team in points per game (34.4). Redshirt freshman Gio Lopez threw for 2,559 yards, 18 touchdowns, and just 5 interceptions while rushing for 465 yards and 7 TDs on 83 carries, while Fluff Bothwell and Kentrel Bullock combined for 1,663 yards and 20 scores out of the backfield.
Ezell walked on to the Crimson Tide football team in 2007 and was part of the 2009 squad that won a national championship. He was a student assistant with the Tide in 2011 before becoming a graduate assistant at Colorado State. After 3 seasons there, he returned to Tuscaloosa as a GA for 2 seasons before being promoted to an offensive assistant.
In 2021, he joined the staff at South Alabama as tight ends coach under Kane Wommack. After Major Applewhite was promoted from OC to head coach after Wommack left to run Kalen DeBoer’s defense at Alabama, Ezell moved into the OC role in Mobile.
