I woke up feeling under the weather and with a scratchy throat. So my plan for today is to push this set of BN Bears Bullets out the door, eat some soup, get some rest, and see where the rest of the day takes me.
Before we dive into Bears-centric things, here are a few words on Greg Gumbel — the long-time CBS Sports broadcaster who passed away on Friday. Gumbel was everywhere on my TV growing up. He was a studio host, play-by-play voice, and even popped up on video games as part of the NCAA 2K College Hoops series. Gumbel was a game-changer and a pioneer whose contributions should always be remembered. (ESPN, NBC News, NY Times, The Hollywood Reporter, AA) I can’t believe 179 yards of total offense was all the Bears could muster up on Thursday Night Football. That number is just so gross. Rookie punter Tory Taylor racked up 327 yards of punts and had five kicks land inside the 20. Quarterback Caleb Williams’ comment about the fourth-round pick not punting a lot while with Chicago’s football team has aged like a milk carton that was left behind the radiator. It’s not as if the Seattle Seahawks offense was better. Geno Smith threw for just 160 yards and Zach Charbonnet ran for just 57 yards. It was an ugly, sloppy, mess of a game. The kind of game that makes you wonder why you even watch football in the first place. I feel awful for anyone who paid with their hard-earned cash to watch that game. And I feel even worse for anyone who received tickets as a holiday gift. You probably deserve better. No wonder a Sun-Times headline referred to the game as the “ugliest game you’ll ever see.” Chris Emma (670 The Score) called it an “unsightly” loss. I don’t think you can go too hard on this team for that performance. It was the kind of game that makes me regret feeling good about this team earlier in the season. There is probably a larger discussion to have about this team’s future with Cairo Santos as its kicker. However, I think the team likely made the right decision in not sending Santos out there for what would have been a game-tying field goal. Firstly, the Bears have had a pair of kicks blocked in recent weeks — including a potential game-winner against the Green Bay Packers. With the deterioration of the protection being what it is, I wouldn’t have had too much faith in history not repeating itself. Anecdotal evidence aside, Brad Biggs (Tribune) points out the 58-yard-field goal attempt would have been a long shot and lines up every attempt of the same distance (or longer) in Soldier Field history: Detroit Lions kicker Jake Bates tried a 65-yarder last week (and missed). Eddy Piñeiro misfired on a 59-yard try on Nov. 9, 2023. Matt Prater, another Detroit Lions kicker, was successful from 59 yards on January 3, 2016. I need Bears fans to realize that a 60-yard field goal in climate-controlled domes or summer-ish weather that we get in September and early October isn’t the same as a 60-yard field goal in December at Soldier Field. With that being said, I understand why there is a segment of the fanbase calling for a change at kicker. This feels like a “be careful what you wish for” situation. Besides, I think the Bears have bigger needs than a kicker. © Daniel Bartel-Imagn Images A very random question: Why did the Bears get so screen-happy in Week 17? Was this weather-related? A schematic thing? Audibles at the line? I feel as if every time I want to make a strong pitch for keeping Keenan Allen around for another season, he has a key drop that makes me have second thoughts. On the other side of the coin, cornerback Kyler Gordon does something every week that makes me wonder why I haven’t already written up a case for him to get an extension. Gordon will be extension-eligible after this season ends, so that conversation will come soon.Bears | Cubs | Bulls | Blackhawks
