Rockford’s Shutout Win, Winter Classic Details, Trade Rumors, Kantserov, Latvia! and other Blackhawks Bullets

Rather than focus on the Blackhawks’ complete dumpster fire in Buffalo last night, let’s think happy thoughts on a Saturday morning. Rockford hosted the Iowa Wild last night and Drew Commesso pitched the first shutout of the season, making 25 saves in the win. (I’ll note that the last time the Blackhawks got their a***es kicked this bad and the IceHogs had a big win on the same night, Chicago fired Luke Richardson. )

The IceHogs got two goals each from Zach Sanford and Gerry Mayhew and this beauty from Colton Dach, his tenth of the season. Dach, Ethan Del Mastro, Wyatt Kaiser, Landon Slaggert and Gavin Hayes had assists in the game. After performances like last night one has to wonder how long until Dach makes his Blackhawks regular season debut.

    — Rockford IceHogs (@goicehogs) December 28, 2024 Taylor Hall basically called his Blackhawks teammates soft last night. I wonder how they’ll accept that level of communication from a leader… Welcome to trade rumor season, Blackhawks fans. We’re now thru the Christmas break roster freeze, which means the winds can start blowing again. And we’re starting to get some predictions for trades that might make sense and locations that might be smart of the most obvious trade candidates in the NHL. Pierre LeBrun and Chris Johnston at The Athletic are picking the best landing spots for trade candidates this week, and Hall was included in the second part of their series. Johnston said the Colorado Avalanche (I can see it) while LeBrun surprised me in picking Utah. Hall had said previously that he was open to re-signing in Chicago. That was before he was healthy scratched and subsequently complained about the lack of communication with his then-head coach (who eventually got fired). We’ll see how the organization views him as part of the immediate solution in Chicago between now and the trade deadline (March 7).

    — Pierre LeBrun (@PierreVLeBrun) December 27, 2024 The NHL announced some additional information about the Winter Classic on Friday. Hockey Hall of Famers and beloved Blackhawks alumni Chris Chelios, Jeremy Roenick and Denis Savard will then take the ice for the ceremonial puck drop. During the second intermission, the NHL will spotlight the Blackhawks’ and Blues’ First and Second Quarter-Century Teams. As a reminder: Smashing Pumpkins will perform pregame and Chance the Rapper will perform during the first intermission. During the second intermission, DJ Oreo will perform. He crushes it at the United Center so this is a great way to get it going for New Year’s Eve.

    — NHL Public Relations (@PR_NHL) December 27, 2024 Scott Powers loves him some Russian prospects, and the latest has been on fire for the past month in the KHL. Roman Kantserov, the 44th overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, has nine goals and eight assists in 18 games for Metallurg Magnitogorsk. As I noted previously, his season started late because of offseason shoulder surgery. He’s signed in Russia thru the 2025-26 season but he looks like the explosive offensive threat he was touted to be before the 2023 draft. Really good breakdown here from Scott.

The Latvian squad might be as hyped as any in that country’s history after they upset Canada in a shootout last night.

    — TSN (@TSN_Sports) December 28, 2024 Getting back to talking trades and the Avalanche, apparently they’ve seen enough from Mackenzie Blackwood to give him a five-year extension with a $5.25M AAV. Let’s see if he can finally live up to the billing of being an expected No. 1 in Colorado.
