Boxing Day saw Manchester United fall to their third straight defeat in all competitions after their 2-0 defeat at Molineux against Wolves, which also saw club captain Bruno Fernandes sent off early in the second half for a second yellow card.
Ruben Amorim’s side fell down to 14th in the table after their defeat in the West Midlands on Thursday night, and will be looking forward to returning to their home stadium and playing in front of their home fans, despite having lost each of their last two home games.
It’s now five losses in six domestic matches since their 4-0 win over Everton at the start of the month, but despite being down in 14th they remain only three points off the top half of the Premier League table, a gap they’ll looking to bridge with a victory on Monday night.
Newcastle make the trip to Old Trafford in fantastic form of late, carrying a four game win streak which includes 4-0, 4-0 and 3-0 wins in their last three Premier League matches respectively, the most recent of which coming on Boxing Day against a strong Aston Villa side.
Victory on Thursday took Eddie Howe’s side into the top five where they now sit just four points off the Champions League places following the Boxing Day fixtures.
The Magpies have won only one of their last three matches in the Premier League, but won their most recent one 4-0 at Portman Road, and travel to Old Trafford to take on a United side only three teams have lost more home games than in the league all season.
Newcastle have won three of their last four matches against Manchester United, though the Red Devils did get the better last time the two sides met in May last season, recording a 3-2 win.
