Paul Finebaum offered his opinion on the upcoming matchup between Texas and Arizona State in the College Football Playoff this week.
Finebaum, who made his comments on The Matt Barrie Show, admitted to having some doubts about the Longhorns — as recently as their last game against Clemson. He alluded to some habitual mistakes made by quarterback Quinn Ewers throughout the season.
“Texas is just one of the hardest teams to wrap your arms around,” Finebaum said. “I’ve been out there so many times this year. Quinn Ewers may be holding up the MVP of the national championship trophy in 3 weeks, but we’re still going to be questioning ‘what made him so good?’ For all the good that he does, some of it gets taken away by bad decisions.”
Finebaum did credit UT for the way it closed out Clemson last weekend in the first round of the CFP, however. The Longhorns were able to produce a goal-line stand in the final minutes of the game to help seal a 38-24 win over the Tigers.
“I was impressed,” Finebaum added. “Just when you were about to wonder about them, they put up that goal line stand against Clemson. So I like their chances [in the next round]. I don’t know Arizona State like you do. I respect the job that they’ve done this year. It’s pretty amazing. But it feels like it ends here.”
Oddsmakers generally agree with Paul Finebaum in this spot. Texas is a 13.5-point favorite over the Sun Devils, according to the latest odds from FanDuel.
Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET on New Year’s Day.
