The Navy released a photo jut before Christmas showing the San Diego-based USS Carl Vinson transiting the legendary Surigao Strait in the Philippine Islands.

The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier was seen in the strait on Dec. 22 during routine operations with the 7th Fleet.

The strait separates the regions of Visayas and Mindanao in the Philippine archipelago.

The Vinson deployed from San Diego on Nov. 18, reportedly headed to the Middle East.

In 1521 the famous Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan sailed through the strait during the first circumnavigation of the Earth.

In October 1944, during the Battle of Surigao Strait, American battleships sunk an opposing Japanese force in the last major naval action that did not depend upon air power.
