ROCHESTER, N.Y. — With less than 24 hours until Christmas, last-minute shoppers are making their way to local stores. News10NBC’s Antonina Tortorello visited the East Avenue Wegmans to see why some are waiting until the last minute.
Many shoppers either delayed their holiday shopping or returned for forgotten items. Both Wegmans and Eastview Mall were bustling with activity.
The National Retail Federation predicts holiday spending will hit a record $989 billion this year, an increase of nearly $34 billion from last year. Experts suggest the shorter time frame between Thanksgiving and Christmas may have contributed to the rush.
One shopper, Lauren Johnson, said “I just bought my mom and my best friend a gift from Pandora. It was something last minute.”
Another said, “I got cookies and sandwiches for later. My mom and I are going to my sister’s house in Buffalo.”
Wednesday, shopping could be challenging as many stores, including Wegmans, will either be closed or have special hours.
