Farewell, Brennen Davis – Reportedly Signing with the Yankees

The emotional attachment to former top prospects – especially ones who always had the best attitude and persevered through so much – is strong. So today is a very sad day, even as I can only with the guy the very best.

Brennen Davis is reportedly off to join the New York Yankees organization:

The Yankees and outfielder Brennen Davis have agreed to a minor league deal, sources tell @JustBB_Media. Davis, 25, was regarded as one of the game's best OF prospects before a tough stretch of injuries slowed him over the last few seasons. He OPS'd .828 in 47 AAA games in 2024.

The most important things here are (1) I hope Davis can finally stay healthy and take that next step forward, because he is a legit awesome dude; and (2) he probably made the right career decision moving into another organization.

On that latter one, it was just going to be a tough road to getting big league playing time soon with the Cubs. Even after the departure of Cody Bellinger, you’re still talking about Davis probably being behind Alexander Canario, Owen Caissie, and Kevin Alcántara as the current depth options, and that isn’t accounting for any other outfielder the Cubs might add externally for the bench, or for Christian Franklin, who could play his way into being a depth option this year, too. When signing a minor league deal, a guy’s number one priority HAS TO BE whether he sees a good potential path to the big leagues if he breaks out. With the Yankees, that path to being a 4th/5th/6th depth option is so much more clear.

As for the health thing, all we can do is root for Brennen Davis. The talent is there. The body just has to cooperate. Unfortunately, it hasn’t, and the Cubs designated Davis for assignment earlier this offseason.

The Yankees are getting a former top-50 prospect whose trajectory was derailed by multiple injuries (some of it was flukey HBP stuff, then a congenital malformation addressed by lower-back surgery, then another another core surgery), and who flashed some of that same upside potential earlier this year before yet another injury (a back fracture) shut him down. He came back from THAT one, only to see his season end late in the year on a freak play at second base. An absolute nightmare of a three-year period.

All the best to Davis. Hope to see him make The Show with the Yankees, and also hope the Cubs don’t find themselves in a spot where they miss him this year. That shouldn’t be the case, given the depth, but baseball sometimes has its own plans.

Also: the Yankees really like to trade for, or otherwise pick up, former Cubs.
