The Genius Way to Keep Your Shrimp Cocktail Cold

Shrimp cocktail is a classic holiday appetizer that’s as elegant as it is delicious. With its juicy, chilled shrimp and tangy cocktail sauce, it’s a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. Plus, it’s light, refreshing and easy to serve, making it perfect for balancing out those heavier holiday dishes. Whether served in a fancy martini glass or on a platter, shrimp cocktail always feels festive and special.

Keeping it cold, however, can be a challenge, especially if it's served buffet style. You want those shrimp to stay crisp and fresh, not limp and warm. Ice trays under the platter can help, but they melt fast, and good luck squeezing that tray of shrimp into the fridge with everything else!

Keeping a shrimp cocktail cold is essential to maintaining its freshness, texture and safety. Luckily for us, xontent creator @stephgigliotti28 (Stephanie) just shared the smartest, cutest way to keep your shrimp cocktail chilled this year and we're here for this genius hack!

Stephanie shared her tip on Instagram and TikTok and it received a lot of positive comments in both places.

She filled a disposable aluminum pan (the kind you can get at the grocery store) with water. She only filled the pan halfway with water to leave room for the water to expand while still leaving room for the shrimp on top.

Next, she placed sprigs of rosemary and some fresh cranberries all around the tray, but she says that you can add anything you like to it, like some slices of oranges or lemons for a pop of color. She mentioned that you don't need to worry about placing the ingredients precisely because they're going to go where they want to go as the ice freezes, but that's part of the charm. She stuck the pan into the freezer overnight so she'd have a sold ice block by party time.

The next day, she took it out of the freezer and placed her cold shrimp right on top of the ice. As the party goes on, and the shrimp is removed form the ice, guests will be able to see the rosemary and cranberries, and as the ice melts they will show through more and more, creating a festive centerpiece.

This is absolutely brilliant because the ice will melt right into the tray, so there's no watery mess to clean up and the shrimp will most likely be gone before the ice completely melts, because it's so thick.
