This is the Most Popular Christmas Cookie Recipe on Social Media Right Now

At least once in their lives, a food lover will go on a soapbox to say one of their family members makes "the best" dish, whatever it may be. Mention roasted carrots and Parade deputy food editor, Nina, will say her husband, Matt, does them like no other. Chef Andrew Zimmern can tell you his son taught him to make the best buttered popcorn. According to legendary chef Julia Child, her aunt knows all there is to know about making perfectly creamy pumpkin pie. The point? Food lessons that come sprinkled with familial love are hard to argue against.

And the holidays are prime time for leaning into family recipes and bragging rights. The latest family recipe to catch the Internet's attention? Christmas sandwich cookies from the mom of TikTok content creator Brett Chody of Brett's Bites.

If you're chronically online, then you probably know Brett as the best friend of famous TikTok creator, Jake Shane and the genius behind the dessert bowl trend. Her family also owns Garrett Popcorn, the gourmet Chicago-based popcorn shop. It's safe to say Brett and those related to her know a good recipe, so when her mom's Christmas sandwich cookies racked up 600k views, we wanted to learn more.

It all started when Brett posted a video of herself at the kitchen counter with her hands clutched around a giant box. Inside was a batch of the Christmas sandwich cookies her mom makes every year. Her followers demanded that she share the recipe and Brett made their sweet dreams come true by posting the written recipe on her TikTok.

As luck would have it, the sweet little sandwich cookies couldn't be simpler. All you do is cut out the mini cookies, sprinkle them with decorative sugar, make a simple buttercream frosting and stick them together to create wee sandwiches. Brett's mom also makes spritz cookies, but it was the sandwich cookies that have taken off on social media.

The girlies who love cookies (and Brett) immediately took to TikTok to share videos of them trying out the viral cookies. The verdict? People are obsessed and cannot stop making them.

How to Make Brett's Bites Christmas Cookies

For this recipe, you'll need softened butter, whipping cream, sifted flour, powdered sugar, vanilla extract and decorative sugar.

To start, combine 1 cup of softened butter with whipping cream and sifted flour using an electric mixer. Chill the dough in the fridge for at least 2 hours. Roll the dough out into a 1-inch-thick sheet, cut small circles with a cookie cutter or bottle cap and coat the cookies in decorative sugar. Bake at 375° for 7 to 9 minutes, then let them cool completely.

For the frosting, mix 1/4 cup softened butter with powdered sugar and vanilla. Spread frosting on one cookie, top it with another, and repeat with the rest.

You can eat the cookies right then and there or if you want to eat these cookies exactly like Brett, stash the cookies in the fridge and eat them cold.

The cool thing about these cookies is that they likely date back to at least the mid- 1950s. "I love that everybody is making these," said one commenter on @k8mckinney's TikTok video. "They first appeared and Betty Crocker’s 1956 cookbook as cream wafers and it was the first time the cookbook came out with butter cookie recipes after the war." We can't confirm all of those facts, but there is a Cream Wafer Cookie recipe on the Betty Crocker website that is quite similar to Brett's.

For her part, @k8mckinney thought the recipe was worth the time and effort. "They were so good," she said. "Definitely have to eat them cold."

But there were dissenting voices online too, as you might imagine. Take @bkara8899's video about the viral treat. "They are hands down the weirdest recipe I've seen in my life," she says. "They end up being very puffed up, which I didn't expect," she continued. She found them to be too sweet and crumbly, but she did admit that they're fun. As a recipe reference, she mentioned the cream wafer recipe on All Recipes, which calls for an egg yolk in the frosting.

The plot thickens! Is this a cookie you'd try or not so much?
