Police identify victim of weekend homicide near East Oltorf, release photos of person of interest ...Middle East

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Police Department said on a Saturday night it was investigating a homicide in southeast Austin.

The incident occurred near the 2500 block of Huntwick Drive, according to police. That is a residential area near South Pleasant Valley Road and East Oltorf Street.

APD said officers responded at approximately 9:25 p.m. related to a shoot/stab hotshot call. The caller said gunshots were heard in the area, and a person was shot.

At the scene, officers found an unresponsive inside a vehicle with "apparent gunshot wounds," according to a press release APD issued on Monday.

Police identified the victim as Mario Damian-Rayas, 34. First responders attempted lifesaving measures, but he died at the scene.

"At this time, we have homicide detectives on scene. We have our crime scene unit. We have officers from different capacities working this incident, trying to understand why this took place and how this took place," APD said during a briefing Saturday night.

Police released images of a person of interest Monday, asking for the public's help identifying the man.

Anyone with information should contact the Austin Police Department at 512-974-TIPS or submit a tip anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program by visiting austincrimestoppers.org or calling 512-472-8477. A reward of up to $1,000 may be available for any information that leads to an arrest.

This incident is being investigated as Austin's 70th homicide of 2024.
