Tennessee G Cameron Carr leaving program in midseason, per report

Tennessee guard Cameron Carr has been out with an injury since the middle of November. However, various reports indicate he is stepping away from the program in the middle of the season.

According to Mike Wilson with the Knoxville News Sentinel, Carr’s decision is effective immediately. The expectation is that Carr will eventually enter the transfer portal, though that does not open until late in March.

Coming out of high school, Carr was a 4-star prospect and the 56th overall player per the 247 Sports Composite.

Carr appeared in 14 games as a true freshman for Tennessee without much of an impact. However, he was filling a rotational role while averaging over 10 minutes per game in his first 4 appearances to start the season before a thumb injury.

Carr was averaging 4.8 points, 1.5 rebounds an assist while shooting 40% from 3-point range this season.

The move is particularly surprising given the start to the season for Tennessee under Rick Barnes. The Vols are undefeated and have wins over Virginia, Baylor, Miami and Illinois so far in nonconference play and could be looking at a special run.

If the reports hold true, Carr will not be a part of that journey as he investigates a new destination.
