Old friend Joc Pederson is signing with the Texas Rangers, per multiple reports. This, on the heels of their trade of Nathaniel Lowe to the Washington Nationals.
Free agent designated hitter Joc Pederson in agreement with Rangers, sources tell @TheAthletic.
Outfielder Joc Pederson and the Texas Rangers are in agreement on a contract, pending physical, sources tell ESPN. Pederson, 32, hit .275/.393/.515 last year, destroyed right-handed pitching and is regarded as an elite clubhouse presence. First on the news: @Ken_Rosenthal.
— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) December 23, 2024No terms year on the deal, but I expect Pederson to get a nice contract for a bat-only guy.
Pederson, 32, has actually been a monster at the plate two of the last three seasons, and if the Rangers just let him face righties, he’ll probably do the same in 2025. Pederson figures to see time at DH, in the corner outfield spots, and maybe at first base. The Rangers have guys already at all of those spots, but they must be planning to coordinate in some way (or they’re planning something crazy like making Adolis Garcia available in trade).
The Cubs were not likely to be in the market for a bat-only corner outfield/DH/1B type, even in a world where they surprise everyone and trade Seiya Suzuki. That is to say, I don’t see an impact here for the Cubs, other than more general movement in the market before Christmas.
I suppose the other reach of an impact would be something like: at what point do the Rangers tap out on spending, and then they definitely can’t bring back late-inning relievers like Kirby Yates or Jose Leclerc or David Robertson? That wouldn’t be an impact only to the Cubs, but obviously we know they’ve been connected to those guys.
