Boston Gets Revenge, White’s Slump Continues, Chris Duarte Recalled From G League, and Other Bulls Bullets

First things first, I want to thank Matt for covering my butt over the last couple of games. The wife and I did a little Christmas in New York this weekend, and we sure checked all the boxes. We went to Radio City, shopped in Soho, perused Central Park, oohed at the Rockefeller Christmas tree, and ahhed at the window displayed. Every street, store, and hot dog cart was decorated with Holiday cheer. Even the rats were wearing Santa hats!

So here is a shoutout to Matt for making things easy on me! I’m glad he got at least one fun win.

See, that’s more like it! A couple of days after outshooting the Celtics on the TD Garden floor, the Bulls couldn’t keep up with the defending champions at the United Center. They shot only 37.8 percent from the field, making their third-worst shooting effort of the season. Jevon Carter was the only player to shoot over 50.0 percent from the field (3-4 FG), and not a single player passed the 20-point threshold against Boston’s 8th-ranked defense. Boston looked like they wanted revenge … and they got it. If Thursday night belonged to Zach LaVine, Saturday night was all about Jayson Tatum. The potential MVP candidate took full advantage of the Bulls’ poor ball pressure, finishing with 43 points, 15 rebounds, and 10 assists. It was complete and utter dominance, especially behind the arc where he went 9-15. Tatum repeatedly used high screens to create the space he needed for open looks. Boston found what was working and spammed that. Rebounds were the silent killer. Aside from Nikola Vucevic, this Bulls team just isn’t very good in that department. They hold just the 22nd-ranked REB% in the NBA. To be sure, the Celtics aren’t significantly better (16th), but they have the sizable wings and physical guards to give this Bulls team a ton of trouble. They won the overall rebounding battle 58-43, finishing the night with a 25-12 advantage in second-chance points. This ability to create extra possessions is a big reason why they were able to gain and keep a comfortable lead. via Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images The Coby White slump continues. The Chicago Bulls guard has looked like a shell of his breakout self since late November. He hasn’t scored 20+ points in a game since Nov. 22, and he’s now shooting just 36.0 percent from the field over the last 10 games. Things have gotten so rough for the Bulls’ starting guard that Billy Donovan opted to play him only 25 minutes last night. Do I expect him to eventually break out of this funk? Of course, but this is a frustrating stretch, to say the least. Torrey Craig and Jevon Carter had every reason to be upset. They initially signed with the Bulls under the assumption that they would play meaningful minutes for a playoff-bound team. With Chicago now prioritizing player development, both have been completely left out of the rotation and have appeared in 12 or fewer games. Nevertheless, they each appear to be in pretty great spirits and more than willing to help the young guys come along. You have to respect the way they have handled things.

I asked Craig how hard it is to know he can contribute on the court and not get the chance and he said: "It's not hard because this (being a veteran mentor) is my role now. I had vets help me as a young player. It's my time to pay it forward."

    — K.C. Johnson (@KCJHoop) December 22, 2024 While the Bulls held things together in the first half, this made it feel like things could turn south at any moment. You don’t try this up 2 points in the first quarter!

Lonzo Ball ➡️ Zach LaVine…Cool alley, but the oop wasn't quite there! ? pic.twitter.com/evIGbu9vKk

    — CHGO Bulls (@CHGO_Bulls) December 22, 2024 I loved seeing Matas Buzelis get up double-digit shot attempts in his 20 minutes of action. He may have only shot 4-10 from the field, but I liked just about every shot he tossed up! This score on the fastbreak was extremely well executed by the rookie …

    — Chicago Bulls (@chicagobulls) December 22, 2024 Chris Duarte will rejoin the Bulls after a short stint with their G League affiliate. The 27-year-old did exactly what he was supposed to with Windy City, scoring 36 points with 5 rebounds and 5 assists against the Memphis Hustle. He followed that up with a well-rounded 15 points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals against the Santa Cruz Warriors. Are these performances about to lead to more playing time? Probably not. But they did occur at the G League showcase, which means he may have grabbed the attention of some execs around the league before hitting free agency this offseason.

    — Chicago Bulls (@chicagobulls) December 22, 2024 Connor Bedard’s sophomore season hasn’t been perfect, but he still continues to climb up the league leaderboards. Who is ready to be hurt again? The Chicago Bears will host the Detroit Lions later today. Let’s hope Caleb Williams can work some magic.
