Nate Bargatze has made a name for himself as one of the most beloved comedians of his generation, and while the Nashville native has two upcoming Netflix specials to add to his already impressive resumé, he's not stopping there. In an exclusive Parade cover story, Bargatze opened up about pursuing his dream of bringing his clean brand of comedy to the big screen.
"I've always just done stand-up. I want to be able to create movies that hopefully the whole family can come out to," Bargatze told Parade ahead of taping his CBS holiday special, Nate Bargatze's Nashville Christmas, at Nashville's Grand Ole Opry House. "I was never great at auditioning for other people’s movies. So I kind of figured I would have to just make my own."

Bargatze—whose first film, The Breadwinner, is in early development—went on to tell Parade that in addition to making his own original films, he'd love to star in a remake of one particular movie: the 1966 slapstick comedy, The Ghost and Mr. Chicken.

"I love Don Knotts. I don't think I could do what Don Knotts does," he explained before joking, "They would probably still go with Don Knotts, to be honest. Even though I traveled back in time, they would go, 'Nonetheless, we're going to stick with Don Knotts.' But you know, that's the stuff that I loved. It was just super fun and silly."

Making family-friendly movies isn't the only new project Bargatze has on his mind, though. The stand-up comic recently finished writing his first book, Big Dumb Eyes: Stories From a Simpler Mind, which hits bookshelves May 6, 2025.

"It was very fun. It's nothing heavy," he told Parade. "It's just telling stories that have happened to me, stuff that sometimes doesn't always work in stand-up. I read Paul Reiser’s book when I first started comedy, and I remember really laughing at it. I was just reading it in his rhythm and his voice and I liked it so much."
Nate Bargatze's Nashville Christmas, which aired on Thursday, Dec. 19, can now be streamed on CBS. His new Netflix special, Your Friend, Nate Bargatze, hits the streaming service on Tuesday, Dec. 24.
