Flights and ferry journeys have been cancelled for many travelling ahead of Christmas following severe winds across the country.

Heathrow Airport confirmed it had cancelled a “small number” of flights due to “strong winds and airspace restrictions”.

Around 33 flights were cancelled by Saturday afternoon and a further 33 are expected to be cancelled on Sunday, according to the flight tracking website Flight Aware.

At least 15,000 people were affected by flight cancellations with the majority coming from British Airways.

Ferry services in Scotland – including P&O’s service to and from Northern Ireland – were also cancelled due to “adverse weather conditions”. CalMac, Northlink, and the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company also postponed crossings.

A further 21.3 million drivers will take to the road on Sunday with further travel delays expected ahead of the Christmas holiday, the AA has estimated.

A spokesperson for the group said: “With more than 20 million car journeys expected on both Saturday and Sunday if the congestion wasn’t enough of a headache, the inclement weather could create the perfect storm.

“We advise those heading out to allow extra time to travel and increase the distance between themselves and other road users.”

Train passengers are also facing further delays and cancellations across the country as rail services are affected by high winds and staff shortages ahead of Christmas.

Great Northern and Thameslink have apologised to customers for “cancellations and service changes” as a result of “a shortage of train drivers today”.

Passengers due to travel on Northern are also set to face widespread cancellations on Sunday, with routs across the northwest cut.

The operator said: “Recently, we have seen higher levels of cancellations in the North West and for that we are sorry.

“The underlying reason is train crew availability, in particular on Sundays which is contractually outside of the working week.”
