Kirk Herbstreit has been part of the College GameDay crew for nearly 3 decades, crisscrossing the country and experiencing various college football atmospheres up close and personal.
After a trip to South Bend on Friday for Notre Dame’s first-round matchup against Indiana in the College Football Playoff, Herbstreit and the GameDay crew were in Columbus on Saturday ahead of No. 6 seed-Ohio State vs. No. 11-seed Tennessee. It’s the Volunteers’ first-ever Playoff appearance, and Vols fans weren’t hard to spot in the crowd.
Herbstreit and GameDay host Rece Davis made mention of the turnout from Vols fans.
“Tennessee’s here, man,” Davis said.
“I’ll just say this, honestly. Twenty-ninth year of doing College GameDay and this is by far the most fans from the visiting team I’ve ever seen,” Herbstreit added, to the agreement of his colleagues.

Ohio Stadium is certain to be at fever pitch all afternoon long. We’ll see if Vols fans can provide their team the support it needs to topple the Buckeyes and advance to the quarterfinal round. The winner faced top-seeded Oregon in the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day.
Saturday’s game comes nearly three decades after the most recent — and only other — meeting between the two programs. Tennessee defeated Ohio State 20-14 in the 1996 Citrus Bowl.
Kirk Herbstreit says Tennessee had ‘by far’ the most visiting fans he’s seen at College GameDay Saturday Down South.
